Array-based Migration of NAS Storage Pool from VNX 5700 Storage to VNX 5200 Storage

Hi,

I have an existing VNX 5700 whose file system is of 35TB size comprising of NFS and CIFS shares and i want to migrate this whole file system with CIFS and NFS to new VNX 5200.

Please kindly share your thoughts how can this migration be achieved with minimal downtime .

Thanks

Enclosing a document you should review.

The concepts covered highlighting Replicator should provide some good guidance for you.

Also, including a doc on SAN Copy simply for additional interest.

Best Wishes

must be multiple file systems, not possible that it's just one 35TB file system.

it can be used for migrations as well. Basically when you failover you don't fail back.

Hi dynamox,

I have attached my current storage pool structure there is a dedicated nas pool created with 35tb size.you mention as "must be multiple file systems" in recent discussion. so now in my case is this solution viable if not could you tell me possible solutions of migrations techniques which can be helpful in my scenario.pool info.jpg

VNX Replicator works at file system level so you need to document how many file systems you have, are they used for CIFS  or NFS or both,  are there VDMs.

Hi dynamox,

I have one vdm with one file system and one cifs server but seems there is only one CIFS share of size 6TB from the document i see.

Thanks in advance

Hi,

if you are migrating to a VNX2 the easiest way is to use the nas_migrate functionality (which uses Replicator under the covers)

Just search support.emc.com for nas_migrate

https://support.emc.com/docu47583_Using_VNX_File_Migration_Technical_Notes.pdf?language=en_US

It’s a CLI command but there also is a downloadable GUI

Hi can you replicate checkpoints?

not directly but you could get creative like this:

1) create checkpoint of primary file system

2) restore oldest checkpoint to primary file system, replicate to target array, take checkpoint on target array.

3) restore next to oldest checkpoint to primary file system, replicate to target array, take checkpoint on target array.

....and so on until you finally replicate the newest checkpoint that was created in step 1. Test on VNX simulator first.
