EMC 5500 RAID5 Raid Groups
Hello everybody
I have a short question about RAID 6 Groups and a VNX 5500 OE 05.32.000.5.204. We would like to buy 8x 2TB Disks in a RAID 6 (6+2) configuration:
- Are there any issues withi this Build and RAID 6 Rebuild? I though that I heard something about that with that release.
- For this customers we use trandional RAID Groups and no Pools when i create a pool it tells me RAID6 (6+2) when I would like to create a RAID Group it just tells me RAID6. Is there no recommended disk count or is it always the same regardless if it is a pool or a traditional RAID Group?
- Because it is an older OE is there a possability that the VNX doesn't recognize the hard disk? What would be the workflow to get it to work then? OE Update or firmware update on the disk? Unfortunately we are not able to update the OE ATM.

I don't recall any issues in particular with that build and RAID 6, subsequent release notes don't show anything obvious either.
For Raid Groups (not pools) the preferred disk count for RAID 6 is 8+2 but you can still create it with 6+2.

- There should be no critical issue with this build and RAID 6 rebuild. You can double confirm it by checking the release notes: https://support.emc.com/docu55932_VNX-Operating-Environment-for-Block-05.32.000.5.216-Release-Notes.pdf?language=en_US
- Pool and traditional RAID group have different best practices on disk layout, You can refer to https://www.emc.com/collateral/white-papers/h12682-vnx-best-practices-wp.pdf for the details.
- Always order the disks from EMC or EMC service partner, our engineers will make sure all the disks work properly in your array.

The "issue" is that there is an DAE with 8 free slots so it would fit to fill it up with 8x 2 TB disks an create a RAID Group with Raid 6 and those 8 disks.
Where exactly is the disadvantage of a less disk count?

Go for it then
If you need to expand it, do it by a 6+2 group again (so more space would be consumed for parity than if you has used 8+2 initially), otherwise enjoy.
