How can i determine whats the Pool design R5 (4+1 ) with 3,4,5,6... disks
Hi is there a easy way to see in Unisphere how the pool was "setup"
for example i want to expand a pool with the same internal Raidgroup config like before but i'm unsure if the pool was setup like
R5 ( 4+1 ) with 3 disks ,4 disks ,5(Recommended) disks ....7 8 9 disks.
Can i deterime it in any way through Unisphere GUI ( without Report Wizard )

Highlight the Pool and click EXPAND.
The current disk grouping will be displayed in the RAID Configuration drop down box.

Hi Brett. I double checked your input but my Test R5 ( 4+1 ) with 3 disks want to expand by 5 disks

Hi Sebastian, Interesting, perhaps it only displays recommended counts, if you have used them.
Personally, I would grab the info from naviseccli; Do you have access to it ?
naviseccli -h arrayspa -storagepool -list -id # -all | select-string -pattern "RAID Type" -context 1,2
(from a powershell session).
From that you'll get the RAID Type and drive count for each tier.
Also, please consider using RAID 6 for NL-SAS drives, the rebuild times are very long.

From what I see yo actually configure a RAID5 wint 3 disks (2+1) this is not the best practice. As Brett@s tall you should make NL-SAS drives as RAID6:
NL-SAS for Classic RAID6: 4+2 or 8+2
NL-SAS for Pool RAID6: 6+2 or 14+2
When you correctly configure your pool, you should also expand in multliples of the base RAID.
If you create the pool as 6+2, you should add in multiples of 8 disks.

Because im OCD, I add to the pool in only the RAID Group Modulus. So for example, a 4+1 R5, ill add 5 disks so I know where the failure domain exists. This is pertinent when doing vertical binding as I only want a single disk per shelf. My .02

Hi Alvaro, this is only a "TEST Pool" to demonstate that the expand of disks is not equal to the current layout.
I know the BP for VNX ... but as you wrote " you should expand in mutiples of the base RAID" sometimes you need to determine whats the base RAID and expand even if its not BP
