How to change the management IPs of a VNX Unified Array

As your enterprise network expands, there may come a time when you need to change the IPs on your array.  On a unified array, it can get a little tricky, so a primus solution emc279637 has been created along with a video demonstration, to help guide you on your way.

A couple of things to note:

  1. This procedure is not valid for BLOCK Only arrays (like the VNX 5100) as well as gateway arrays (like the VG2 or VG8)
  2. You will need a null modem serial cable to connect to the back of the control station
  3. The procedure is broken down into two demonstrations
    • Part 1: Changing IPs to a different subnet
    • Part 2: Changing IPs within the same subnet
  4. This will disrupt access to Unisphere, but WILL NOT impact access do data.

You can find the video demonstration here: https://support.emc.com/media44409

I believe it's covered as part of primus emc60751  It shouldn't be different for a VNX i don't believe, but it will reboot the SP wich may cause an outage if you don't have multipathing.

Community Document: https://community.emc.com/docs/DOC-20485 has been created from this discussion and will be visible post approval.

Just to add to this, we've also always had a document available from the "My Documents" portal for VNX:

https://mydocs.emc.com/VNX/relatedDocs.jsp

1) Under "Additional VNX documentation", click on "Related documents"

2) Then under "VNX Management", you will find the following:

Changing VNX File/Unified IP Addresses

Changing VNX Gateway IP Addresses

The primus is correct , if you are planning to change the ip of management ports of SPA and SPB in Unified Model.

For block model:

1. type the ipaddress/setup of concerned SP in Internet Browser e.g. 10.XX.XX.XX/setup.

2. The setup page will open, where you can change the ipaddress of the SPs.

3. The SP will reboot once ip changed.

Note: You need to make sure that Multipathing is enabled on the attached hosts. else tresspass the LUNs to other SP before changing IP address..

it's whatever you set it to during initial configuration

There is no default – the default is that the interfaces are unconfigured until you run the installation utility

Sean, the document is great, thanks.

Question, is this procedure valid if I'm using File 7.1.65.8 with Flare 05.32.000.32.201?

I have just initialized my unified VNX5300 just to find out that I must change the newly assigned IP's.

Thanks

Gilbert,

You will want to refer to the document mentioned in one of the responses above:

https://mydocs.emc.com/VNX/relatedDocs.jsp

1) Under "Additional VNX documentation", click on "Related documents"

2) Then under "VNX Management", you will find the following:

Changing VNX File/Unified IP Addresses

I've included the direct link also:

Also, you are correct the KB article and video he noted will apply also to your Unified array.  Therefore, you can refer to either the document linked to directly above this post and/or his original post (KB article and video).

Thanks a lot for the help.  With the information you provided, I managed to change CS0, CS1 and the SP IPs in about 1:30 hours, it worked just fine in our environment with file 7.1.65.8 and 05.32.000.5.201.

Awesome, good to hear that it worked out for you.  You didn't mention it, but did you also have an IPalias assigned to your CS's?  Of course, ignore the following if you already took care of it.

I simply wanted to mention (probably for the benefit of others reading this thread) that if you were to *only* follow the KB article that was originally referenced, it does NOT make any mention of the IPalias.  However, if you followed the document as generated via https://mydocs.emc.com/VNX which was also referenced later in the thread, you would see the steps to change it starting step

7. Recreate CS 0 IP aliases using...

Thanks, Following the document instructions, before any change, I found out that the VNX had no alias configured, therefore I did not had to delete any, and also I did not create any alias at the end of the procedure either.

It could be because I was changing the IPs before implementing any Block or File services in this Unified VNX.

The initialization tools don't create an IPalias (but do strongly believe it should though on dual CS setups).  You need to create and test it manually.  If you haven't already done so, steps are in the VNX System Operations guide:

https://mydocs.emc.com/VNXDocs/System_Operations.pdf

Skip to the section "Create an IP alias".  While largely optional, it is recommended, and I would go as far as suggesting it is required when configuring VNX Replicator between arrays.
