How to migrate data from VNX 5300 to VNX 5400

Hello foes anybody know of a way to migrate/move data from VNX 5300 to VNX 5400 without losing data. Please tell me how to do it or point me in the right direction.

you can use different data migration tools like SAN copy, Open Migrator or PPME. All these tools requires migration planning and there will be some downtime associated for the applications based on what you use.

The array-based tools like SAN Copy, Replicator, MirrorView, etc. The host-based tools like robocopy, emcopy, etc.

What kind of data do you need to migrate, File or Block? Do you want to do it online, or offline?

You can read the following whitepapers to know about these tools:

Thanks Roger. I read the documents on the links you sent. Unfortunately I am still not clear on what to do exactly. Here is our situation. We have a VNX 5300 with data on it. Recently, we acquired a VNX 5400 and would like to use the VNX 5400 instead of the VNX 5300. So we need to move/copy data from VNX 5300 to VNX 5400 while the system is online if possible. After the transfer we would like to shutdown VNX 5300 and start working with VNX 5400 with very little or no downtime if possible.

Is this scenario possible. If somebody has done it before , may you provide a step by step guide.

Thanks

I guess your VNX doesn't have MirrorView installed (or at least you should know how to establish a MV session between two VNX boxes). Since SAN Copy is available at no cost to VNX customer (factory installed already), you can refer to the following step-to-step guide: http://www.emc.com/collateral/hardware/white-papers/h8173-migrating-clariion-vnx-san-copy-wp.pdf.

It's about CLARiiON and VNX1 (Block storage) , but the general steps are same. I will let you know once EMC publishes the updated version of this document.

For File protocol (Data Mover or VDM), you can refer to:

I wonder if the two arrays are similar enough for a direct physical disks transfer to work .....

Hi,

there are quite a number of methods for data migration - both for using host side tools and array tools.

Which one is applicable to your setup depends on your config, which protocols and clients you use, ...

On a forum we can provide pointers - for more details and step-by-step instructions please work with the EMC office or partner that sold you the system. They should be able to advise and help.
