Looking for VNX storage array Configuration

Hello,

I need a vnx array for 3 environments in an enterprise organization, I want an FC connection

a. Oracle DB (Block size : 8k), iops 30,000 at peak, Read/write ratio 60%/40% 10TB

b. VMWare Virtual Environment - 20,000 iops at peak, R/W ratio 80%/20% 30TB

c. Archive Environment - Static Data, High performance is not required, 100TB

Please consider following

1. Array model

2. Disk types

3. Pool Configuration (Type and How)

4. Connectivity to SAN switches

Do you have anything like a ballpark figure for your budget?

As a customer with some VNX/VNX2 experience, looking at your IOPS figures I would like to say that a VNX2/5600 would be the right model to shoot for if you needed a single array solution with some headroom for growth.

I would want a significant amount of FAST Cache to help with read/write bursts and hot-spots.

Your Oracle and VMWare workloads, as described, require peaks of ~1250 IOPS per TB.  That suggests mixing at least some SSDs in with some smaller (300GB/600GB) 10/15k spindles in one or more pools.  All flash for these would be awesome, all spinning disk with just fast cache above it would be challenging...so Hybrid suggests itself.

I would likely configure 2TB or bigger NL-SAS drives into RAID groups for your archive environment.

EMC has recently introduced 16Gb FC I/O cards to this line; if you were building from scratch I would use 16Gb switches, HBAs, and storage ports, if not, I would start buying 16Gb from here on out so that you are positioned to benefit from it once all three parts are in place.

Just for fun I spent a few minutes and this is a sample configuration that I think would meet/exceed your stated requirements, provide a modest cushion for immediate growth, and still permit significant expansion if/when needed:

VNX2/5600

25 slot, 2.5" DPE with 300GB 15k vault pack

8 x 25 slot 2.5" DAE

11 x 200GB SLC for Fast Cache

187 x 300GB 15k 2.5"

21 x 800GB eMLC

7 x 15 slot 3.5" DAE

105 x 2TB NL-SAS 3.5"

16Gb FC ports, FAST Suite, 4 port back-end SAS I/O card.

...

There are many alternatives possible, but I would present this as a reasonable strawman for review and consideration.
