VNX Block Statistics Logging

Is it required for a customer to enable Statistics Logging on the VNX SP properties for NAR data collection thru the GUI?   There seems to be some conflicting information.  I’ve seen support documents that say with Flare 24 and higher Statistics Logging did not need to be enabled to collect a NAR.   I’m trying to understand what you do or do not get with that check box enabled.

I found this post that seems to indicate that in Flare 24 and higher, if you enabled Data Logging under Analyzer, then it automatically enables Statistics Logging for you, therefore it is not necessary to enable Stats Logging separately.

If any EMC'er can confirm/deny that'd be great.

Hi,

Each storage processor (SP) maintains a log of statistics for the LUNs, disks, and storage-system caching. You can turn this log on or off. Statistics logging affects storage-system performance, so you may want to leave it off unless you have a reason to monitor performance. The statistics log uses a 32-bit counter to maintain the statistics, so when the counter is full, the statistics restart at zero. As a result, you will see a sudden decrease in a statistic if you view it shortly before the counter is full and shortly after the counter restarts at zero. If you want to keep the log turned on for more than two weeks, you should reset the log about every two weeks, so you know when the statistics start at zero.

And as RyanP says in https://community.emc.com/message/495813#495813 "

For Flares under 24, Statistics Logging was the on/off switch for analyzer. For 24 and above if you hit start inside the data logging window, it enables statistics logging."

Thanks

Keep in mind that several external applications require it to be enabled for its features to properly report upon.  For instance, VNX Monitoring and Reporting relies on it as well as the VSI Storage Viewer plug-in datastore performance graphs within the vSphere Client.

Also, keep in mind within Unisphere/Navisphere Manager (even for users that do not have Analyzer), there are scattered throughout the interface various statistics that only display if it is enabled.
