Hello Vishal,

Traditional server vs balde servers

Basic physical differences are:

A traditional server is a standalone unit with several components in a dedicated case for example HDD, NIC, CPU, RAM, power and cooling.

Blades are running in a blade center (blade enclosure) and operate in array. Each blade consists chiefly of HDD, RAM and CPU. The main difference is that the networking, power and cooling are integrated in the chassis – the blade enclosure.

Costs:

The initial outlay for blades is higher because of the additional costs for the blade center. On the other hand a blade center is or could be cost effective due to lower running costs in long term runs.

This is only a short introduction. For a decision you have to consider additional points:

  • Current and future requirements
  • Degree of capacity utilization

I hope out there in the ECN are experts which can supplement this introduction.

Regards,

Stefan
