Ask the Expert: Deploy EMC Software-Defined Storage for Data Protection-as-a-Service and Better Performance
Welcome to another EMC
|
|
Ask the Expert event. EMC continues to push the envelope with ViPR Controller and ViPR SRM releases for software-defined storage. Now, you can further automate and manage as-a-service offerings like data protection-as-a-service, including at the application level, and bring flash and hybrid-flash storage into the fold–all through a common software platform. Join this event to engage with technical subject-matter experts responsible for delivering these EMC storage automation and management solutions and get access to some new information like the just-published third-party test report about reducing operating expense with EMC ViPR Controller and ViPR SRM, and new videos.

The new release of ViPR SRM 3.6 also has data protection enhancements. What are these new features?

In v3.6, ViPR SRM has enhanced integration with EMC Data Protection Advisor. ViPR SRM v3.6 adds reporting on compliance with backup policies for EMC Avamar and Symantec Net Backup. ViPR SRM backup reporting includes a summary of backup and restore success rates, and presents unified information about the associated backup environment, which enables users to remain aware of current and potential issues. It also displays the number of files that have been backed up and restored, including views by server and policy over time.

This release, ViPR SRM 3.6, adds new dashboards and reports for complete visibility into object storage resource utilization and performance for the EMC ECS Appliance. We have also created predefined alerts for most platforms to allow for simple alert configuration. We have added support for the new VMAX3 arrays as well as enhanced our reporting on IBM SVC and NetApp. Finally we have also enhanced our ViPR Controller integration with additional reports, metrics, and Link-and-Launch capabilities.

ViPR SRM can result in up to a 99% reduction in generating reporting costs. Read about it in the new Reducing Operating Expense with EMC ViPR Controller and ViPR SRM test report by Principled Technologies (page 40).

ViPR SRM has great cost-savings benefits on the reporting end. What might be some of the management OPEX benefits?

When troubleshooting an issue it takes 88% less time to discover problems with ViPR SRM. Testing showed the manual process required 4 minutes and 28 seconds to log into all the elements, give a cursory review of each, and export the data for review. With ViPR SRM, it took only 31 seconds to view and export the same data. We’ve heard about how ViPR Controller performs with native support for file, block, and object. Experts: could you please tell us how ViPR Controller does vs. OpenStack?

In the recently published Principled Technologies test report, it was noted that ViPR Controller detected and provisioned storage 50 percent faster than performing the same task manually in an OpenStack Cinder deployment.
Below is an excerpt from the report about the testing (starting on page 28):
"In our testing, we configured OpenStack Cinder to provision block storage volumes on a ell EqualLogic 6110 array. We then connected ViPR Controller to the inder node via the third-party block storage provider. Using the third-party block storage provider allowed us to order volumes from the Dell EqualLogic 6110 in ViPR Controller, as if we were managing the array directly. ViPR Controller detected and provisioned storage 50 percent faster than performing the same task manually in an OpenStack Cinder deployment. It took 79 seconds with ViPR Controller while it took 159 seconds to perform the same task manually.
OpenStack Cinder can support multiple backend storage systems for provisioning block storage. ViPR Controller displays each backend storage system as defined in the Cinder configuration file, along with other identifying information . Some additional configuration within ViPR Controller may be necessary for Fibre Channel back-end storage."
