Remark:  I have NOT yet downloaded/installed/tested this new version... I am still using 17.8.x

It seems the recent builds 17.9.x and 18.1.x offer more incremental changes rather than a significantly new program... the change in number is therefore merely a reflection of the calendar year.

As usual, the avast [BETA] forum is flooded with complaints about builds 17.9.x and (early releases of) 18.1.x...

https://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=15.0

so anyone who chooses to update should proceed with caution.   In particular, watch-out for any new "modules" that might suddenly pop-up during/after the installation.   [We have no idea if avast's new anti-exploit feature is compatible with Malwarebytes AntiExploit module.]

Windows XP users should take note that avast will be announcing its END-OF-SUPPORT for XP.    Apparently version 18.3 was the last XP-compatible version.   (There have been many XP-related complaints/problems reported with 18.4, although I believe SOME users claim it works for them).

Presumably DEFINITION updates will continue for XP users [at least for a while], just not new program updates....

The following was copied/pasted from https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=220639.0

End of support for Windows XP/Vista

Beginning on January 1, 2019, new Avast Antivirus products will no longer be delivered for the Windows XP and Windows Vista operating systems.  As customer demand grows for Windows products for Windows 7 and other new versions,  demand for products that support Windows XP and Vista decreases.  In order to receive new feature releases of the Avast antivirus software, users will be required to update their Windows operating system.

This means that as of  January 2019, existing users on the Windows XP or Windows Vista OS will remain on version 18 or older rather than migrating to version 19.1 scheduled to be released in January of 2019. However, please note that all Windows XP and Vista users will continue to receive virus definitions updates from the Avast Threat Labs database after this date and Avast Antivirus versions 18 and older will continue to work as usual providing full protection,  but will not receive regular automatic updates of new program versions with new features.

================================================================

Remark:   This news was expected.

What I'd like to stress here is that the avast forum has been "flooded" with complaints from XP users even about some versions of 18.x ... indeed, there had been speculation that 18.3 was the last XP-compatible version.   I have 18.3 on my XP system, and have not tried 18.4 / 18.5 .

(with acknowledgement to Corrine, for posting at Landzdown...)

From https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/avast-users-having-internet-issues-and-malwarebytes-conflicts-after-upgrade/

Avast 18.6.2349 causing connectivity problems - (Some) Users have started to complain about not being able to browse web sites.  Temporary work-around:  Disable the Avast WebShield component.

Avast causing conflicts in Malwarebytes.   Temporary work-around:  Either disable MalwareBytes Web Protection component,  or disable Avast's "Real Site Protection" component.

============================================================================

 I'm still running avast 17.8 (released 9 November '17) on my primary Win7 system [and avast 18.3 (released around 1 June '18) on my tertiary WinXP system].   And I can't say I've been experiencing any problems with either.

I believe that problems like those being experienced are intrinsic to avast's insistence on trying to release a "new" sub-build almost monthly, continually adding new "features" [which most users consider to be unwanted "bulk"], without taking the time/effort to fix long-standing known problems :-(   That's why, with each new update, I advise users to proceed with caution.

Just a "heads up" here --- Version 19.x, to be released in December (or January), will be "the first fully 64-bit Avast version" (which, as previously announced, means it's no longer XP/Vista compatible). It also means, that as a complete re-write of its code, "anything can be affected by this change". Caveat Emptor!

I like more popular antiviruses. I use Kaspersky for a long time and I like this solution. But I decided to try Avast recently. I like the avast premium review. The system works much faster, I like it.

Just downloaded avast couple of days ago for a first time. Very happy with it.
