Continuous MSI Installer errors, hlktmp file, and inability to install new software

I am facing an issue with MSI Installer. Whenever I try to open any application, the MSI installer popups and a message appears that Windows Installer cannot find Symantec Antivirus. Msi. I uninstalled Symantec earlier today because I was having other difficulties and wanted to run other software. From the event log, I could see that MSI installer fails every time it pops up with a warning with the following properties:
Source: "MSIInstaller" Type: "Warning" and EventId: "1001".

I have tried to re-install Symantec and Windows Installer but my laptop won't let me (I get error messages about the installation failing).

I read several posts on the Microsoft site and tried to address the problem myself with no luck. While trying to empty my temp directories, I came across a file that I cannot delete: hlktmp file.  I am wondering if this may be contributing to the problem.

I have attached the Hijack This log.

Thank you :)

Hello again,

I ended up running MBAM and deleted errors that came up. I also ran Live One Scanner and CCleaner. The Windows Installer is still not working (e.g., I cannot install any Microsoft updates) :(

I have included the MBAM and updated HJT logs below.

Quick update....

I went to the microsoft community and found the following link: http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?pg=1&p=1&tid=7f28cb15-01df-42e0-826e-768e9c5dcf3c&dg=microsoft.public.windowsupdate&lang=en&cr=US&sloc=en-us

I followed these instructions and the updates are finally downloading:

1. Click on Start and then click Run,
2. In the open field type "REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL" (without quotation marks) and
press Enter.
3. When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in WUAPI.DLL succeeded" message,
click OK.
4. Please repeat these steps for each of the following commands:
REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL
REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL
REGSVR32 ATL.DLL
REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL

I still have to wait and see if they'll install properly, so I'll update shortly.

Welcome to the Dell Malware Removal forum, K_Kat.

I'm looking over your log but in the meantime can you tell me if have installed or know of a program installed called Alladin Hardlock Device Driver? Please check Control Panel to see if it is listed there under Add/Remove Programs. It may be listed as just Hardlock Device Driver. Don't do anything with it yet as we are just checking for it at this point.

Also, please rerun MBAM but this time run a Full Scan, instead of a Quick Scan, and post the results.

Hi williamkidd,

Thank you for your response :) I recall seeing Aladdin in my registry but I deleted it yesterday. It was never listed in my Add/Remove programs. However, the following is listed: HASP HL Device Driver.

Here is the full MBAM scan log I ran:

Oops....I just googled HASP HL Device Driver and it IS listed on the Aladdin product webpage. I'm not sure why I have it...I downloaded a student version of the stats program S Plus (S+) last week. Could it be associated with that?

Also...another update on the Windows Installer....it works now. Adding the above-mentioned .dll did the trick :) However, I still think my system has other problems.....I would really like to "clean up" and ensure that I have all of the required protection. I have to download Symantec because my university requires it. I am going to re-install it now and see if it will work.

It's probably not related to the program as it is a USB driver unless you also installed some hardware with it. It is most likely related to a USB dongle so you may end up wanting to reinstall/repair the drivers at some point if you are using that hardware.

Also...another update on the Windows Installer....it works now. Adding the above-mentioned .dll did the trick

That's good to hear. That initial DLL is the Windows Update Application Programming Interface (WUAPI) and all of those other DLLs are associated with Windows Update. What you did was reregister them.

However, I still think my system has other problems.....I would really like to "clean up" and ensure that I have all of the required protection. I have to download Symantec because my university requires it. I am going to re-install it now and see if it will work.

Ok, I can help you with "clean up" and give you some advice on protecting your system. Did you have any luck reinstalling Symantec? If not then we will have to run the Norton Removal Tool and possibly the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility before trying again.

K_Kat,

There's going to be a slight delay for some further research and food but I have a good idea of the direction that we need to take next so hang tight and I'll be back ASAP.

Hi williamkidd,

Thank you! I uninstalled symantec again and ran CCleaner. It would not update at all. So, I'll wait for your reply :)

Hello again :)

I actually went back to the university webpage (I am a student and we have access to the Corporate Edition via a download on the University of Waterloo webpage) and downloaded and installed everything successfully. So, Symantec is back up and running with updates.

I am still having problems with msconfig and uninstalling portions of Nero and other programs that I no longer need. There's a long list of .msi packages on the Add/Remove Programs list on Windows but it won't let me delete the icons. If we could do a thorough clean-up and ensure that the operating system is working ok, that would be great. Thank you! :)

K_Kat,

What version of Symantec AntiVirus is this? It looks like it may be the Corporate Edition. Please let me know the full product name listed on the CD/DVD.

If it is a Corporate Edition then please answer the following question:
* If this computer belongs to someone else, do you have authority to apply the fixes we will use?

Hi Williamkidd,

I realized that I never responded to your second question. Yes, this is my own personal laptop and I have sole administrative privilages. I actually solved all of my initial issues by rebooting with the Windows XP CD in repair mode. Now, MSCONFIG, installer, Windows XP SP3, and Symantec all seem to be functioning fine. However, when I run HJT, I still get quite a list in the log. I'm wondering what is and isn't safe to 'fix'?

Thank you:emotion-1:

Also...

Since I'm trying to "clean up" my computer, I was also wondering if these startup settings (generated by HJT) are set in an efficient manner (i.e., allowing the system to startup and run as smoothly as possible).

Thank you!

Hi K_Kat,

Thanks for answering those questions for me. I'm glad to hear that you were able to get some of those issues resolved. I wanted to make a few comments that should help as we continue troubleshooting.

1) Try to keep posts limited to one forum when troubleshooting a possible malware issue. I noticed the thread that you posted in the Microsoft OS forum that Rick was helping you with. The problem with having posts in multiple forums is that you may be changing things in one forum that will affect the things that happen in the other forum(s). It can sometimes get confusing to us if we ask you to do something based on an HJT log that is later altered by something suggested elsewhere and you may also get differing opinions or directions that will be confusing to you as well.

2) When running HJT be sure to close all other applications first, including web browsers. If you go back and look at the Running Processes sections of the logs that you've posted in this thread you will notice that iexplore.exe shows up in some of them and not in others. You'll also notice multiple iexplore.exe entries in the ones that do show those entries. The multiple entries seem to be a result of having IE8 running when the HJT log is generated but in some cases seeing multiple entries of that program can mean other things so it's good that they aren't showing up if it can be helped. On a side note, I ran HJT on my system with two instances of IE8 running and there were 5 iexplore.exe entries and an entry for IELowutil.exe (which is related to IE8 too) that showed up in the log.

3) This one applies mainly to this forum (Malware Removal) but can also be helpful in some of the other Dell forums. Do not do anything unless instructed by the person that is helping you. There are a couple of reasons for this with the first being that we are looking at a snapshot of your system at a point in time (via the HJT log or the logs of other programs) and if you are making changes then it may alter what we suggest that you do next. The second reason is that if we are dealing with a malware issue and you are surfing the net then there is a possibility that you may run into some other malware and neither of us would know about it until a new log is posted. This could also make it more difficult to correct the original issue. I know that the temptation is high to try things while you're waiting for a response but you can see why following one path is desirable.

Having said all that, I'll take a look over the new information that you've posted and reply back ASAP so hold tight. :emotion-1:
