HJT Log in need of review: Pop-up software detected

I just recently got a bug that keeps giving me pop-ups on my computer.  I ran Ad-Aware and I'm running Norton Antivirus 2005 right now.  These files couldn't be deleted after the full system scan.

syswcc32.exe

webhdll.dll (2 copies of this file)

whAgent.exe

whiehlpr.dll

whInstaller.exe

Welcome. Thank you for using Dell Community Forums.
I am reviewing your log.
In the meantime, you can help me by doing the following:

* Have you have posted this issue on another forum? If so, please provide a link to the topic.

* If you are using any cracked software, please remove it.
Definition of cracked software:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_cracking

* If you are using any P2P (file sharing) programs, please remove them before we clean your computer.
The nature of such software and the high incidence of malware in files downloaded with them is counter productive to restoring your PC to a healthy state.
A list of P2P's is here: http://www.castlecops.com/t204179-P2P_programs_we_ask_that_you_remove_first.html

* If this computer belongs to someone else, do you have authority to apply the fixes we will use?

* Have you already fixed entries using HijackThis? If so, please restore all the backups and then post another log.

* After we begin working, please print or copy all instructions to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out procedures.
Please follow all instructions in sequence. Do not, on your own, install/re-install any programs or run any fixes or scanners that you have not been instructed to use because this may cause conflicts with the tools that I am using.

** We may be using some specialized tools during our fix. Certain embedded files that are part of legitimate programs or specialized fix tools such as process.exe, restart.exe, SmiUpdate.exe, reboot.exe, ws2fix.exe, prcviewer.exe and nircmd.exe may at times be detected by some anti-virus/anti-malware scanners as a "RiskTool", "Hacking tool", "Potentially unwanted tool", or even "malware (virus/trojan)" when that is not the case.
Such programs have legitimate uses in contexts where an authorized user or administrator has knowingly installed it. These detections do not necessarily mean the file is malware or a bad program. It means it has the potential for being misused by others. Anti-virus scanners cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert you or even automatically remove them.

* Your HijackThis is outdated. Please remove it using Add/Remove Programs or the uninstaller in HJT.

Please download HJT Installer for version 2.02 from Here to your desktop.
If not available use this alternate link: Here
  • Click the Download button. When the Trend Micro HJT install box appears, double click on the HJTInstall.exe. Click on Install.
  • It will be installed by default here: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
  • A shortcut to the application will also be placed on your Desktop.
  • The program will open automatically after installation.
  • You can double-click the icon that was placed on the Desktop to run subsequent HijackThis scans or you can use the icon inside the folder. The folder HijackThis is where you will find the HJT logs that you save. When you use the application to remove anything, you will also find the backup copies made by HJT inside this folder.
  • The first time you open HijackThis, check the Main Menu button at the bottom center. When the main menu appears check the box "Show this window when I start HijackThis".
  • Click on "Do a system scan and save logfile."
When the log pops up in Notepad, copy and paste that file back here.
  • DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
  • Before closing HJT, please click on the AnalyzeThis button. "Analyze This" DOES NOT mean "Analyze My Log". You will need to post your log on the forum.
  • Close the web page that appears and then close the program

  • * If your replies do not fit in one post while we are handling your issue, please reply to yourself until all text is submitted. It may take several posts.

I look forward to your reply.

In response to your questions: I have not posted this question on another forum, my computer doesn't belong to someone else, and I have not fixed entries using HiJackThis.

I downloaded the updated version of HJT like you requested.  Here is a fresh logfile.

We are getting there but we have more to do...

Download KILLBOX, extract it to your desktop.
If not available, here is an alternate link for the download:
KILLBOX

Save it to your Desktop. Do not run it yet.

Please disable your Symantec Script Blocking from within your Norton so it does not interfere with anything during our fixes now or later. You can enable this whenever we have verified that your system is clean.
To disable Norton AntiVirus Script Blocking:
1. Start Norton AntiVirus.
If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet Security, then start that program.
2. Click Options.
If you see a menu, click Norton AntiVirus.
3. In the left pane, click Script Blocking.
4. In the right pane, uncheck Enable Script Blocking (recommended).
5. Click OK.

Please launch HijackThis and place a checkmark next to the following:

Click the red-and-white Delete File button.
Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message.).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually into normal mode.

[Note: Killbox makes backups of all deleted files & folders in a folder called C:\!killbox ]
If Killbox tells you any files are missing don't worry but make a note and let us know in your next reply.

Please post a fresh HijackThis log and let me know how things are running.

I ran the Killbox program as requested.  But in my first HiJackThis scan, these files were not on there.

I'm still having problems getting rid of this desktop wallpaper that tells me I have Spyware on my computer.  It also has a link that tells me to 'Click here to scan my PC for Software'.  Either way, here is a fresh logfile.

Clean out your Temporary Internet files manually. Proceed like this:
  • Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
  • Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
  • In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
  • Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
  • Click OK.
Next Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display.
Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok.
Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin

Let me know if the wallpaper and the link are gone.

I couldn't delete the wallpaper from the Display tab, so I had to go into Windows Explorer and find the file.  I did and I deleted it, so the wallpaper is no longer on my computer.

I am not receiving any more pop-ups, but the computer is still running a tad slow on start-up.  Are there any more steps to do?

Please delete Killbox and ATF Cleaner. We no longer need those.

Download and scan each user profile with CCleaner: (It is a good tool to keep and use regularly for maintenance.)
http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds
** Select to download the SLIM version.

** We will be cleaning cookies. Make a note of any passwords, etc. that you want to save.

1. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK
" Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"
2. Then select the items you wish to clean up.
In the Windows Tab:
• Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section.
• Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
• Clean all entries in the "System" section.
• Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
• Clean any others that you choose.
In the Applications Tab:
• Clean all in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
• Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
• Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
• Clean any others that you choose.
3. Click the " Run Cleaner" button.
4. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
5. Click " OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
6. Click " exit" when done.
REBOOT.

Please let me know how things are running after that.

I downloaded CCleaner and ran it on all of my user profiles.  It seems to be running a bit smoother now.  I also ran a full system scan with Norton Antivirus and it deleted a few extra files successfully.  Everything seems back to normal.  Is there anything else I should do?  Should I keep the Malware program on my computer as well?

If I were you, I would keep MBAM updated and use it for on-demand scanning.

After something like this it is a good idea to purge the Restore Points and start fresh.
If everything is running well....
To flush the XP System Restore Points:
(Using XP, you must be logged in as Administrator to do this.)
Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.
When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.
Check the box labeled Turn Off System Restore.

Reboot. Go back in and turn System Restore ON. A new Restore Point will be created.

Here is my standard list of simple steps that you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

You may have already taken some of these steps, and depending on your current security, you may not need to implement all of these:

1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
Windows Update: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

2. Please use a firewall and realtime anti-virus. Keep the anti-virus software and firewall software up to date.
Note: Zone Alarm Firewall (by Checkpoint) has a free version http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/trial_zaFamily/trial_zaFamily.jsp?lid=home_freedownloads

3. You might consider installing Mozilla / Firefox.
http://www.mozilla.org/

4. Do not use file sharing. Even the safest P2P file sharing programs that do not contain bundled spyware, still expose you to risks because of the very nature of the P2P file sharing process. By default, most P2P file sharing programs are configured to automatically launch at startup. They are also configured to allow other P2P users on the same network open access to a shared directory on your computer. The reason for this is simple. File sharing relies on its members giving and gaining unfettered access to computers across the P2P network. However, this practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft. Even if you change those risky default settings to a safer configuration, the act of downloading files from an anonymous source greatly increases your exposure to infection. That is because the files you are downloading may actually contain a disguised threat. Many very malicious worms and trojans, such as the Storm Worm, target and spread across P2P files sharing networks because of their known
vulnerabilities.

5. Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the following Rogue/Suspect Spyware Lists.
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
http://www.malwarebytes.org/database.php

6. If you have not already done so, you might want to install CCleaner and run it in each user's profile: http://www.ccleaner.com/
** UNcheck the option to install the Yahoo toolbar that is checked by default for the Standard version, or download the toolbar-free versions (Slim or Basic) when given the option for those.

7. Practice Safe Surfing with with TrendProtect by Trendmicro.
TrendProtect is a browser plugin that assigns a safety rating to domains listed in your search engine. TrendProtect also adds a new button to your browser's toolbar area. The icon and color of the button changes to indicate whether the page currently open is safe, unsafe, trusted, or unrated, or whether it contains unwanted content.

The following color codes are used by TrendProtect to indicate the safety of each site.

Red for Warning
Yellow for Use Caution
Green for Safe
Grey for Unknown

8. You might consider installing SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
It will:
Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.
Tutorial here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html
Periodically check for updates.

I just have a quick question on the System Restore.  There are two restore points I can choose from.  In your opinion, should I choose the one that is labeled 'Last good configuration' (which also happens to be the day I got the virus) or the other which I think said 'System refresh or review'?

Lastly, when I try to log out of my user profile on XP I keep getting

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y100/mrvarela14/Miscellaneous/programieimage.jpg

Should I be worried?  I can't seem to find this program at all on my computer.

We are flushing all restore points we are not choosing one. If everything is running well, please follow the steps above for purging all Restore Points.

For that error, just end the process, log out, and reboot. See if that helps.
