Home Page URL cannot be changed from http://westernunion.com/

The Home Page on my Internet Explorer has been altered to http://westernunion.com and I cannot find a way to change it back.

McAfee intercepted a cluster of Trojans/Viruses yesterday while I was doing an extensive search via Google.

These included the following (they were coming so fast & furious I struggled just to get Task Manager up & running in order to shut down Internet Explorer):

Found via Real-Time Scan:
Artemis! 7C588163E980 (Trojan); repaired: removed
Exploit-ByteVerify (Trojan); repaired: removed
JS/Exploit-Blacole.g!htm (Trojan); repaired: removed
JS/Exploit-Blacole.h!htm (Trojan); repaired: removed
JS/Exploit-Blacole.p!htm (Trojan); repaired: removed
W32/HLLP.4147 2 (Virus); Repaired
JS/Blacole-Redirect.i (Trojan); quarantined <= Is this the one responsible?!

Found via Full Scan:
Downloader.a! vc (Trojan); quarantined
JV/Exploit-Blacole.f (Trojan); quarantined

I have tried reseting the homepage using IE Tools Internet Options but upon reopening IE or Internet Options the homepage is once again set to http://westernunion.com/.

I have also set every instance of Start Page = http://westernunion.com/ in the Registry to the desired www.aol.com but, even before I exit RegEdit, the old values have already been reset to http://westernunion.com/ !!!!!

I have found and removed several entries in the Registry, Temporary Internet Files and Cookies which have the word "westernunion" in them (the former related to a redirected website in India) but this also has had no lasting effect.

I have Googled this problem but cannot find any solutions more recent than 2005-2008 or so, which means, of course, that most of the links are now inactive.  I have also looked on this forum with about the same success; due to an apparent reorganization, most forum entries cannot now be found (entered under Malware Removal which no longer seems to exist).

System information is as follows:

Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600
Dell Latitude D830, 4GB Ram, Intel T9300 2.5GHz 6MB
Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18702
McAfee Security Center Version 11.0, Build 11.0.669, Last update 4/26/2012
McAfee VirusScan Version 15.0, Build 15.0.300, Last update 5/30/2012
McAfee Personal Firewall Version 12.0, Build 12.0.351, Last update 4/26/2012

Hi bei4now,

Welcome to Dell Community. :emotion-1:

Malware Removal is no longer handled at Dell Community. HijackThis is rather obsolete these days.  My suggestion is to post the required DDS logs on the Malware Removal Forum at SpywareHammer and have the staff trained in malware removal walk you through the diagnostic logs and a cleanup. Please do not attempt to run any additional scans, install software, or use any other tools until an analyst can advise you on the next step If you use the same username there as you have here, I'll link it to this one and I can ask one of the trained analysts there to handle your post as soon as possible. Help is free, but you will need to register there and follow the posting instructions.

Good Luck!

bei4now, a helper replied to your post at SpywareHammer, but you did not reply with the information he requested. Do you still need help?

Thanks for the update, Bugbatter!  I hadn't heard anything back from the SpywareHammer website at all (I was told to expect an email when someone replied).  When I checked today, I noticed the reply had been way back in June and that the thread had now been closed due to inactivity.

All of May and June and the first two weeks of July I was working up in the mountains of Colorado and had no access to the Internet or to my email.  Anyway, because my computer was pretty useless as far as access to the Internet and email was concerned, I couldn't have checked back to see if anyone had emailed me in any case.

In the meantime a friend showed me how to get around the worst of the problem by restoring the registry to the date before the infection (which in large part worked perfectly).

Unfortunately, I still have a rash of collateral damage which I still cannot find a solution for, the most annoying of which include:

1) My desktop is locked into a fixed arrangement which I cannot change no matter what settings I use

2) the format for the display of my folders is similarly locked and cannot be changed either.

I've looked at other examples of this phenomenon on the Internet and have tried all the various "solutions" found to date but to no avail...Any ideas?

Thanks again,

bei4now

Hi bei4now,

You did not mention whether you did a System Restore, or a Dell Factory Restore. Regardless considering that you have restored the registry to some extent, all the diagnostics that you provided originally are outdated. I would suggest that you post your issues on Dell's Operating Systems Forum. Dell has some tech support agents who can assist you there.
