Hi,

Please Download OTL to your desktop.

Double click the icon to start the tool. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).

  • Put a check in the box next to Lop Check and Purity Check
  • Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will be created on your Desktop.
  • OTL.Txt <- this one will be opened
  • Extras.txt <- this one will be minimized

.

Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of OTL.Txt and the Extras.txtin your next reply.

These will be long logs, so please use multipul post if need be.

Thanks
K27.

Hi,

I'm not seeing anything malicious in the OTL log's. I think this maybe related to hardware problems rather than malware.

Please disable all active protection before running the online scan.

Let's try this and see what it dig's up.

Please perform a scan with Trend Micro Housecall: (You need to click the 64 bit scan option on the right hand side of the page)
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

[Watch the Address bar in IE. You may receive alerts that "This site might require the following ActiveX control...Click here to install...". Click on that alert and then Click Install ActiveX component.]

1. Select your location and click the "Go" button if presented with this page.
2. Under "Scan your PC", please click "Scan now. It's free!"
3. Then again click "Scan now, it's free".
4. Read and put a Check next to "Yes, I accept the Terms of Use". Also put a check mark next to "I want to select a different HouseCall kernel".
5. Click the "Launching HouseCall>>" button.
6. This will give you to option to scan with Java-based or Browser plug-in:

* If Java support is disabled on your system or no Java runtime environment is installed, click "Starting HouseCall" under "Browser plug-in and using the HouseCall Kernel". Please be patient while Housecall downloads necessary components. You may receive a Security Warning "Do you want to install this software? Name: hcImpl.cab Publisher: Trend Micro..." Click "Install" when prompted.

* If Java support is confirmed, click "Starting HouseCall" under "Using Java-based HouseCall kernel". Please be patient while Housecall downloads necessary components. You may receive a Security Warning about the TrendMicro Java applet and asking if you want to run. Click "Yes" when prompted.

Again please be patient while Trend Micro HouseCall is updated or installed. This can take some time especially if you are using a dial-up connection.

7. Under "Scan complete computer for malware, grayware, and vulnerabilities" click the "Next>>" button. It will download the latest scan engine and pattern files. When the definitions have been downloaded, the scan will start. Once the scan is complete, it will take you to the summary page.
8. Under "Cleanup options" choose "Clean all detected infections automatically".
9. Click the "Clean now>>" button.
10. When presented with a notification "According to your instructions, all detected infections were cleaned...", click "OK".

If the online scan finds anything please post the log back to me, if it finds nothing then please just let me know.

Thanks.

Please Go to Start > Run > and copy/paste devmgmt.msc in to the run box and hit enter.

A window will open with a list of all the hardware devices and there relevant drivers currently installed on the machine, Please post back if any have got a yellow exclamation mark ! or a red cross X next to them.

If there are no red X's or yellow ! marks please let me know.

Before you exit device manager please expand the Disc Drives entry and please post for me the exact model of your hard-drive.

I also need an in-depth report on what problems you are having with the system, please list for me, programs that will not work, error codes you may receive, files that are inaccessible and any thing else that is not normal.

Thanks,

There were no yellow exclamation points or red X's.

Device listed :  WDC WD6400AAKS-75A7B2 ATA Device  (Is this what you needed?)

As far as problems go, this is my son's computer and with my limited knowledge of what I know so far is that one user account was completely inaccessible and unable to open (my son's) and our McFee was unable to work.  It was not allowing us to update anything-even with a new subscription download.  But, during the process of all this I have been doing with you, it popped up an update screen finally and allowed an update.  All scans ran showed no viruses but my son's user account was accessible but our wireless internet wasn't from his account.  The two other accounts are fine.  The internet has been running very slow -even with broadband and certain webpages could not be viewed (facebook, etc.).  It seems okay now.  However, I'm still worried we may be infected because my son had been downloading things and ignoring warnings from McFee at the time.  We've seen a few weird popups clicking on stuff stating corrupted files and things.  Even with the Hijack program it stated that I may have to fix manually because some files were corrupted.  This is all I know.  But, like I said, alot of things seem alot better now.

Hi hagensmom,

I really do not think this is malware related. There are very few infection's that target 64 bit system's, or are even able to infect them for that matter.

The message from HJT is relating to your Host file, this is a file that is deeply protected by Windows 7 and as such HJT is unable to fix it if it was infected, (which it isn't) if it was then OTL would of reported it.

I need more information on the "weird" pop-ups stating corrupted files, What was the exact wording of the pop-up, what files were mentioned and what "things" were mentioned.

I really need you to be as presise as possible here, remember, I can not see your system, you have to be my eyes and let me know exactly what is happening.

We are going to run to scans. The first is to check for infection and the second is to check the Hard Drive, please proceed as follows.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.

MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.

  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.

On the Scanner tab:

  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.

Back at the main Scanner screen:

  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

After MBAM has compleated please run a diagnostic scan on the Hard Drive.

Please visit THIS web page for the tool and the instructions for checking the Hard Drive.

I need you to run the extended test and post back as to whether the Hard Drive test gives a Pass or a Fail.

If it gives a fail please give me word for word what it says.

The extended test is going to take a very long time, could be well over two hours so please be patient.

Please post back the MBAM log, the result of the HDD test and the exact messages you are getting from the popup boxes.

Thanks.

As far as pop-ups go, I can only tell you that it has happened only a couple of times.  Usually when I have started up a program or when starting the computer itself.  I have only seen this pop-up myself twice and both times I only remember the words "corrupted files".  I haven't seen this in awhile so maybe it has been fixed.  I'm sorry.  I know you can only go by what I tell you and I have tried to started up the computer and a few programs to get it to pop up and couldn't get it to do so.  I ran the two scanes.  The hard drive extended test came back pass.  Yay!  However, the malware log below will show 1 infection removed but when it was running the scan McFee picked up 2 on the exact files the program was checking.  Some adware and a trojin.  Do you think this may have cleaned everything out?  As far as I can tell everything seems to be working great.

Here's the log:

Hi,

Good news on the hard drive, at least that's one thing we no longer have to worry about.

Don't be sorry about the pop-up boxes, if they have stopped, then that's good also.

I would like to see the log from McAfee.

Could you post it for me please,

Thanks.

Hi,

The items that McAfee detected are related to Malware Bytes Anti-Malware and are totally legitimate, This is the reason we advise people not to run two Anti-Virus programs on the same system, there is always the chance that they will clash.

If you have any other problems or concerns please post them, if not I think we can start tidying up.

Thanks,
K27.
