I think I have a trojan...HiJack this log included

I have a program called 'DCHQ8KFR.EXE' that runs automatically (it's called 'ADWPREP' in the task manager).  I'm told it's a trojan.  My EZ Armor didn't pick it up, and I've been using every virus scan I can find and nothing picks it up.

This is my logfile from HiJack This:

That could be a trojan I do not see it any where

But I do know 2 ways trojans will can enter now and in the future

C:\Program Files\WinMX\WinMX.exe
C:\Program Files\Kazaa Lite K++\KazaaLite.kpp

probably a firewall would help

http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp

and Download spybot 1.3!!
http://kujoe.com/freeware/spybot.php

Spyware - Because its not just big brother any more. Be aware of what is running on your computer, what it is doing, who put it there, why they put it there and if they had the right to put it there.

http://www.nsclean.com/trolist.html

Has the name of that Trojan - BUT I can't see it running in your hijackthis log.

Do you still get reports of it - is it still in your taskmanager.

If so provide another hijackthis log for me please.

Try this in safe mode (F8 at Boot time) and check that they are not active in taskmanager first, endtask if they are.

Check these in hijackthis, AND WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED, fix checked.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [NortonAV] C:\WINDOWS\System32\DCHQ8KFR.exe

The following activeX controls will reinstall when(and if) you revisit that website, UNLESS you know they are from a safe source, check to remove.

Well, program is no longer running in the background...my computer is booting up like it's brand new, and I can open all of my programs and run my son's Reader Rabbit disks...I think I'm cured!!!

Thank you so much for your help.

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
-McAfee Virusscan (MCVSSHL.DLL)

This part of McAfee seems to be damaged - you may need to reinstall that program. or copy back a copy of that file (MCVSSHL.DLL) which may make it work.
==========================
This is my normal post for when you are clear - which you now are:-
------------------------
How on earth did I get infected with all that spyware in the first place? http://www.net-integration.net/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?;act=ST;f=38;t=3051
Also available from here :- http://www.computercops.biz/postlite7736-.html or http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957
--------------
Look at the info on my website regarding malware (Link below). Some things you can do to stop getting infected again:-

Spybot S&D, Ad-aware Run weekly - or after a heavy internet session.
Spybot S&D v1.3 also have a run time module that runs in the background.

Spywareblaster & Spywareguard, first sets kill bits to stop known bad activeX controls installing, second acts like your AV to stop browser hijacks and installing of known badies.

Also ie-spyad (Link on my site), puts 4000 bad sites in your restricted (banned) sites list, to stop you accidentaly getting sent to a bad site, it has optional list of "bad" adult sites to install as well.

All those with links from my site. Do remember just like Anti-Virus they need to be updated regularly, I do mine weekly, Anti-Virus hourly.

Another good program winpatrol from here.

With these and a firewall in place I have to try various bad sites when checking peoples hijackthis logs looking to sort bad from good, and I have not yet been infected. Still time for it to happen LOL.

Don't forget to get an active, up to date anti-virus installed. If you don't want to go with the mainstream Norton or McAfee, then take a look at AVG from Grisoft.

I don't have a McAfee subscription anymore, I had it as a free trial when I bought my dell.  I thought I had uninstalled the thing.

I do have spybot, and adaware, and a firewall, but I was a bad monkey and forgot to download my windows critical updates (14 to be exact), so maybe that's how the baddie got in.

I'll be more diligent from now on.  Thanks again!

As ddeerrff said - get an AV - AVG is good - or is a list on my web site - you do need one.

Re that 03 Mcafee line - you should fix that in hijackthis, its just a orphaned registry entry now.
