NEED HELP CLEANING MY PC: Trojan, Backdoor, Downloader/ Downloader MisleadApp

My PC runs Windows XP - Yesterday the Antivirus alerted me of 20 .TMP files located in C:\ WINDOWS\ TEMP infected with one of the following : Trojan, Backdoor, Downloader/ Downloader MisleadApp...Action Taken= Quarantine failed- Clean failed- Access denied.

Tried to find those files to delete them manually, but they weren't there... How should I proceed? Thanks in advance for the advice :)

Hi arqa1, and welcome to the forum.

A few questions:

1) Are you having any actual problems, popups or spontaneous alerts with you system, or was this message a result of an on-demand (manual) AV scan?

2) Which antivirus are you using?

3) Try clearing your IE browser's cache (Tools>Internet Options>General tab, and delete your temporary Internet files). Run an AV scan again. Do you still get the alert?

Hi joe53,

1)didn't notice any problems, this alert came up on Symantec Live Protection

(the Anti-Virus installed in my PC)

3)Temp Internet files deleted...Run  the AV scan (Apparently, it deleted/ quarantined all Medium & High risk ones, except

there was an error quarantining the file Adware ISTbar)

I'll keep an eye on the alerts, but for now it seems to be OK.

Thanks :emotion-1:

Adware.Istbar is adware that installs an IE toolbar, and can hijack your home page, redirect you to porn sites, and pop up ads. I'm sure if it was active on your system you would notice! And assuming Symantec is only detecting it in your TIF folder, it is *probably* a harmless leftover file.

To be on the safe side, however, I would download and the free Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware (MBAM) scanner to your desktop, available from here or here.

Disable any other anti-malware programs you have running, if any, to prevent possible conflicts: instructions here. (Remember to re-enable them afterwards).

Run a Quick Scan of MBAM
- Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
- At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
- If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
- Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
- When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
- Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
- You can view the stored log of results in the Logs tab of MBAM.

Let us know what it finds/removes (if anything).
