Hi, Brenda,

It appears that there are just a few remnants to clean up. Are you still experiencing symptoms of malware?

You have Viewpoint installed. Viewpoint developed a behavioral targeting product in 2006. Viewpoint is associated with a program called viewmgr.exe and the ViewPoint Media Player.
Viewpoint is bundled with AOL, AOL Instant Messenger, Adobe Atmosphere, Netscape 7, etc and sometimes not mentioned in the license agreement. Hardware manufacturers pre-install some of these applications.
ViewPoint Toolbar will redirect your search queries and also transmits non personally identifiable information back to their servers. The Viewpoint Toolbar is listed is also classified as a threat in the CounterSpy Threat Library because it hijacks your search queries and also transmits non personally identifiable information back to their servers.
Viewpoint Manager is a media player often bundled with AIM software. Viewpoint Manager is a useless add on.

Because Viewpoint's software will track your web surfing and tailor advertisements based on the web pages you are visiting, I suggest you remove the program.
** Note: Removing Viewpoint Media Player may cause the program that bundled it to not function as intended. For AOL and AIM it is needed to use their 3D icons known as Super Buddies and for customized themes, etc.
If you wish to remove Viewpoint, end process on ViewManager in Task Manager.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
  • Viewpoint Toolbar
  • Viewpoint Experience Technology
Then remove the Viewpoint folder in your Program Files.

Please launch HijackThis and place a checkmark next to the following:

Close all windows except Hijackthis and click "Fix Checked". Close HijackThis.

Run Disk Cleanup in each user's profile:
Click "Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup"
Please make sure only the following are checked:

Click "OK" and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.
Reboot.
Let me know how things are running at that point. If all is well, we'll update your outdated Java.

Thanks for getting back to me on this, I performed the steps you advised and all went well except when I ran that hjt it did not list 1 item in the list to fix.The   023  viewpoint was not listed there,I did find it in the control panel and removed it and ran a file search and deleted all the entries  there were 3 before running the hjt scan. I assume since it didn't show up I am OK. What are the bhos listed with no file used for?

what do I need to do to fix the java I noticed in programs in the control panel I had several versions of it.

again thanks for all your help I also checked out the castlecops site there is a wealth of info there I just wish I understood more of it LOL

thanks Brenda

The BHO's with "no file" are remnants of already removed Browser Helpers remaining in the Registry.They are not used for anything as they have no files attached.

I anticipated Viewpoint to be gone from your log as long as you had removed the program, but I listed it anyway just to be sure.

Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. It is possible that you may be running Java code in your applications that absolutely require a specific version of the JRE to run. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:

  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u6 allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each of the Java versions.

  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Official JAVA Installation Instructions if needed.

Let me know how things are running after that.

Please run Notepad and paste the text between the dotted lines into a new file. Do not copy the dotted lines.

* Make sure that Word Wrap is turned off in Notepad - (click the Format menu and uncheck Word Wrap)

Important:
Make sure there are NO blank lines before Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
Make sure there is one blank line at the end of the file
Make sure that you have copied all of the text (e.g. Don't miss the first 'W')

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Uninstall]
"NoAddRemovePrograms"=dword:00000000
"NoRemovePage"=dword:00000000
"NoAddPage"=dword:00000000
"NoWindowsSetupPage"=dword:00000000

"NoServices"=dword:00000000
"NoSupportInfo"=dword:00000000
"NoModify"=dword:00000000

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Save the file to the desktop as fix.reg and make sure the "Save as Type" field says "All Files". Then please go to the desktop and double-click on fix.reg, and click Yes to merge it with the registry.

Let me know if that helps.

 Bugbatter,

Thanks so much for all your help. I really appreciate your support i just wanted to let you know i was able to get all security issues resolved thanks to your help, but the other problems were hdd related and they have also been resoled by DELL and i am now bug free and back up and running. You guys really are great in the support and advise you lend to members of this forum, thank you for your patience with me and i hope everyone has  as great of an experience as i have had here in getting issues resolved.

Thanks again
