No Desktop - Error message Explorer.exe application error (0xc0000005)

Hi, I have come over from one of the other forums.
Running xp, my son downloaded a virus/hijacker thing and it messed up the boot process of the pc.
Initially, on attempting to boot up, just after the windows login screen, a blue screen error would appear saying:-

'Fatal error in IE has occured at 0028:Coo11E36 in VXD VMM901) + 00010E36.
Error was caused by Trojan-spy. HTML. Smitfraud.c
*System cannot function in normal mode. Please check you security settings.
*Scan your PC with any available antivirus/spyware remover program to fix problem.'

and a window would appear over it with

Explorer.exe. application error
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005).
Click on OK to terminate the application.
.Following advice, I have deleted some reg entries, and now the wording on the blue screen is not there, ie a blank blue screen. However, I am still getting the window error message about the explorer.exe problem.

Through MS antispyware, i have detected a poss. browser hijack and that has been deleted, but I do not seem to be able to run McAfee, or if i try either iexplore.exe or explorer.exe through task master, the error message pops up again. I have tried opening all of these in both normal and safe mode.

However, if i get bored, I can open solitaire, marvellous!

I attatch the result of the hijack this scan in the hope you can help me:
a) make sense of this mess, and
b) get my desktop back

Many thanks, Ian

Download

open and let it install.

That should fix the desktop.

Download to your desktop: UnhookExec.inf from:

Following procedure is from Symantec for what they call Startpage.o but it also will fix similar problems to yours.  Steps d-f may not apply in your case.

  1. Click Start > Run.
  2. Type regedit
  3. Click OK.

    Note: If the registry editor fails to open the threat may have modified the registry to prevent access to the registry editor. Security Response has developed a tool to resolve this problem. Download and run this tool, and then continue with the removal.

  4. Navigate to and delete the subkeys:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{60371670-81B9-4d06-9C42-4DEC1AABE62B}
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{4947DDCC-D549-4D0B-9685-AA58B20E9642}
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{0B6EF17E-18E5-4449-86EA-64C82D596EAE}

  5. Navigate to the subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

  6. In the right pane, delete the values:

    "SMSSU" = "%System%\SMSSU.EXE"
    "Tmntsrv32" = "%System%\Tmntsrv32.EXE"
    "ALGU.exe" = "%System%\ALGU.exe"
    "SPOOLSV32.exe" = "%System%\SPOOLSV32.exe"

  7. Navigate to the subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\explorer.exe

  8. In the right pane, delete the value:

    "Debugger" = "%Windir%\explorer32dbg.exe"

  9. Navigate to the subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\iexplorer.exe

  10. In the right pane, delete the value:

    "Debugger" = "%Windir%\iexplore_dbg.exe"

  11. Exit the Registry Editor

Note: if you can't open regedit.exe you can copy it to regedit.com and open regedit.com

The smitfraud often populates the hosts file with a bunch of garbage so it is a good idea to run hoster - especially if you have trouble getting to the symantec sites:

Download the Hoster from:

http://www.funkytoad.com/

Unpack to your desktop and run it.  If you see green text then press the Restore Original Hosts button and OK.
If you see red text then press the Make Hosts Writable button then the Restore Original Hosts button and OK.

Try check/Fix Checked this line:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe, msmsgs.exe

and reboot.

What happens when you try to start explorer from Task Manager, File, New Task?

Is the file explorer.exe in your windows folder?

Hi Ron, Thanks for the reply.

 I followed the instructions, but nothing has changed. On boot up i still get the error message and no desktop. I ran smitfraud.reg, from the command prompt in safe mode but the desktop still is missing. When I ran the unhookexec.inif nothing appeared to happen.

I then followed the instructions, going through the system registry, but found none of the values indicated and so could not delete them.

Any further suggestions, please

Ian

Sorry.  Reboot into Safe Mode and run HijackThis and do a Scan only then check the box in front of the line I told you to.   Then reboot into normal mode.  run a new scan and post the log as a reply.

Hi again,

Right, ran hijack this in safe mode, checked the F2 line and fixed the line. Rebooted in normal and the same error message came up (Explorer.exe application error), and no desktop.

When i tried to run explorer.exe from task manager-new task, The error message came up again.

I have located explorer.exe in the windows directory.

I ran a new scan, following your instructions and here are the results:

Ron,or anyone else out there.

Sorry but since i didn't receive a reply to last post, does that mean that this cannot be fixed. Is my only solution to remove all the files on the pc and start again. If that is the case, how do i do that, I have my winxp cd.

I would obviously rather not do this as i would lose some of my files although i have managed to copy some of them off of the pc whilst in safe mode.

Was this a virus that caused all this and if so, would the virus be in the files i have taken off the pc?

any help appreciated

Cheers

Ian

Sorry,

I thought I had replied to your post but actually sent your answer to the wrong guy.

Looking at  your original series of posts and the symantec link I think I see what happened.  The system file wininet.dll has been replaced with a bug.  We need to remove it which is not easy tho since you have the cd it may be easier than most.

From Task manager, File, New Task (run), sfc /scanboot, OK

(I think it should run ok from there if not start cmd instead and then type it in the cmd window.  This is the system file checker but we are only telling it to run at boot.  Reboot and it should run and detect the changed file and it should ask you for the  XP CD so it can replace it.)

If it fixes the problem then you can turn it off with sfc /revert so it won't run with every boot.  If it doesn't then you can try the manual procedure:

Boot into Safe Mode and select the Command Prompt option.

Type:

cd \

(Moves you to the root ( \ ) folder.)

dir /s wininet.dll

(Hunts for all copies of wininet.dll.  The result should tell you if you have more than one anywhere on your system.  I believe the good one on XP SP2 should have a size of 589,312.)

(If you find a good one or at least one different from the one in C:\windows\System32  then you can try to rename the old one to wininet.bad then copy the good one to the C:\Windows\system32.  Assume you found another one in C:\windows\system32\dllcache)

cd \windows\system32
ren wininet.dll wininet.bad
copy c:windows\system32\dllcache\wininet.dll .

(There is a space and then a period at the end of the above line)

Note:  If you have one in dllcache and it is the same as the infected one in system32 but you have a good one elsewhere then you will need to delete the one in dllcache first.  It also may be possible to download one

It Worked!!!!!

What can I say other than thank you very much.

I had to run sfc/scanboot through CMD but it didn't work for me.

I then searched for the instances of wininet.dll (13 in all) and the ones in system32 and dllcache were the same size so i changed/deleted as you said. I had copied a new copy from that website you suggested and copied that across to the system 32 folder.

No error messages which was a hugh relief, but still had a bit to do. scanboot was still enabled as i had forgot to stop it. however it seemed to hang on the 'scanboot is searching for changes etc....' screen. This was teasing me as I now had the taskbar was there but wouldn't let me do anything. Went back to CMD and it wouldn't let me sfc/revert either. Anyway, found sfc/runonce, did that and this time it ran. it then allowed me to sfc/revert. at last, a fully running PC, just running virusscan and antispyware stuff now.

You guys are fantastic, cheers from rainy Liverpool (its a wet July so far),

Ian

I have the same error message
Error message Explorer.exe application error (0xc0000005)

It seems to have occured after I got infected with some ad ware.

I have tried going into windows/system32/wininet.dll and updating the file from one downloaded from the dll web site.

It has gotten rid of the blank desktop, but now my desktop is just as bad it goes from having all the icons it to zero icons on it every 4 seconds or so.

Myhijack this log is below.

If anyone can help me I would REALLY appreciate it!

Thanks, Rolland
