Please Help- I can not update any of my software!

Hello!

I have a problem with my computer that I noticed about a month ago.  I went to update ZoneAlarm and when I go to save the file, it just hangs showing a little folder moving, but won't allow me to select a file to save it to.  I also can not update any Microsoft software, I went and tried to do a system scan for software updates at Microsoft and nothing happens, just says scanning system and does nothing.  I have to install Service Pack 2 on my machine.

I think I do not have any ActiveX software installed on my machine, looks like you need it to run certain software updates?  Don't know what it is used for.

I have scanned my machine with Norton, SpyBot & Ad-Ware 6, and still have the same problem.  I also can not update my CoolWebShredder software, if that means anything.

I ran HiJackThis, and here is the log it gave me-

Midnight Star-

Yes, it is pretty much any software I try to download off the internet.  Like I said, I can not even do a system scan at Microsoft and find out what patches I need.  It's like someone blocked my computer from being able to download any files/software that might detect something on my machine, even though I have several spy detectors running, and Norton and ZoneAlarm.  I remember when I first downloaded CoolWebShredder that I had to go to a mirror site or something where it was named something different so that the malicious spyware I had on my machine could not see what I was doing.  Very wierd!  Norton finds nothing on my computer, and the other softwares find just a few little files to delete when I run them.  It's like I am missing ActiveX, what is that used for?

How do I turn on my Internet Explorer Browser Firewall?  I went to see if any site were block in IE and saw none.

Thanks for the help, hopefully all is not lost and I will have to re-load everything!

Angie,

Do you have any idea what this is:

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [D-Tools] C:\WINDOWS\System32\regsvr32.exe /s "C:\Program Files\D-Tools\Si V3\D-Tools Navigator.dll" "C:\Program Files\D-Tools\Si V3\DToolsAutoRegistrationV3.dll" "C:\Program Files\D-Tools\Si V3\DToolsV3Reporting.dll" "C:\Program Files\D-Tools\Si V3\DToolsV3Txt.dll" "C:\Program Files\D-Tools\Si V3\DToolsV3Visio.dll"

Did you install this?

Angie,

Are you able to go to a website and download anything?

Have you tried downloading the updates with another browser? Microsoft updates require ActiveX, but you should be able to get the newer vesion of ZA down until we get this ironed out.

If might help you determine if the problem is specific to Internet Explorer.

Also check your IE setting for downloads and make sure nothing is disabled, the sites your getting them from are blocked.

You might also try turning on windows ICF, turning off your current firewall, then checking to see if your still having a problem.

Angie,

Don't get too frustrated - let's take this one step at a time before we come to that conclusion.

I'll be online for help from around 12:00 - 4:30 pm tommorrow, if you you'd like to troubleshoot this problem then? Either PM with with the instant messenger info your using, or i'll send you mine. I've had this happen to me more than once, but I was using Netscape. I resolved it, by by uninstalling, then reinstalling the browser. It would be interesting to see if IM is affected as well.

Let me know about the above entry...

Star-

Yes, the DTools is fine, I installed that software and it works in conjuction with another Microsoft software.  I have never done instant message before, how would I get that going so I could talk to you?  I should be able to be online tomorrow afternoon-

My software came all pre-installed on my Dell Inspiron 2650.  I am not sure I have software that would just re-install IE.  I also do not have any way to back up my data, my computer does not have a read-write CD drive, and I know it is dangerous not to back up your information for just this reason.  Would we have to do something drastic like that?

Does my log look OK otherwise?  If something bad was loaded, would it not show on my HiJackThis log?

Thanks!

Angie

Angie,

Ok. I was wondering about that. I've never seen parameter line that long before. I don't think we're going to have to do that (reinstall your system). Use Windows Messenger (since we can't download anything just yet), you can start it by:

" Start | All programs | Windows Messenger"

You'll need to setup a passport account with Microsoft before you can use it; It's free. When you get that done, just PM me with the e-mail address you've used to set it up, or i'll send you mine. Once online, I can walk you through checking out your system alot faster than trying to use the forum.

I didn't see anything in your log that stood out as causing a problem. One thing you might try is, from within, internet explorer:

-

1.  Click " Tools | Internet Options... | Security (tab) | Default Level" to reset your default security settings. Then " Ok" your way out.
2.  " Tools | Internet Options ... | Privacy (tab)", make sure it's set to MEDIUM, and under " Sites" that none of the sites your trying to visit are blocked. Then " Ok" your way out.
3.  Click " Tools | Internet Options... | Advanced (tab) | Restore Defaults". Then " Ok" your way out.

-

Run " Disk Cleanup" and allow it to remove everything it finds.

-

Check " Tools | Internet Options... | General (tab) | Settings... | View Objects...". See if any are 'corrupted', 'damaged' or 'broken'. If so, right-click on them, then select 'Delete'.

-

That should get you started.
