Please help to get rid of spyware and unwanted desktop
Hi,
Three days ago, I found out that I've been redirected to a website
www.trustedantivirus.com and other websites that I've no idea where they come from. I think I also got fake warning messages that look exactly from Windows telling me that my system is in danger. Now my desktop has been changed to a red picture with "your privacy is in danger!" text.
I've been trying to 'fix' it myself by looking at how other people suggested. Well, I've downloaded Ad-Aware, and noticed that though I've removed the malware, it comes back again after the next scan. I've even purchase SpyHunter, and it shows some infected items (sometimes under Registry, sometimes Cookies). I've also have McAfee but the scan also seem to return nothing.
I did several scans and removals using both Ad-Aware and SpyHunter and even under Safe Mode but doesn't seem to get rid of them. I also did a system restore to someday in July but did not help. I finally came here and tried to figure out if I could just simply reformat my system. Well, I found this forum and realized that this should be the first place to go!!! Your supports to other users seem very knowledgeable and working too!!

- It is important that you understand each instruction that I give you and follow it exactly. If there is something I have not explained clearly, do not guess at what the instruction means. Ask me to clarify.

2) Download SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users
- Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
- An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
- If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.)
- Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
- Click the Scanning Control tab.
- Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
- Close browsers before scanning.
- Scan for tracking cookies.
- Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
- Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
Close SAS. Do Not run a scan just yet. We will shortly.3) Double-click the smitfraudfix.exe icon on your desktop. Select option #1 - "Search "by typing 1 and press Enter. This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.
Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

4) Create an uninstall list with HJT.
- Open HJT.
- Click on the "Open Misc Tools section" button.
- Then click the "Open Uninstall Manager..." button
- Click on "Save list..."
- The list will be saved in the HijackThis folder, which should be C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis
- Open the "uninstall_list.txt" file and cut and paste it in your next post.
5) Finally, create a new HJT log and post it here.Your next post will thus include 3 logs:

Please print out or copy these instructions to Notepad as the internet will not be available to you at certain points of the removal process (while you are in Safe Mode). Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.
Download CCleaner
1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation. IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbar-free Basic or Slim versions instead of the Standard Build.
2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK " Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"
3. Close CCleaner. Do not run it now. We will do that later.
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
- If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
- Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
- Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
- Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
- Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
- Login on your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click the SmitfraudFix.exe'''again.- Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
- Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
- You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
- The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If it is infected and a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace the infected wininet.dll with the clean file. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.
Open CCleaner.
- In the Windows Tab:
- Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
- A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
- Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
- Click "exit" when done.
Still in safe mode, open SUPERAntiSpyware- Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies if you want to keep those.
- Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
- Clean all entries in the "System" section.
- Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
- Clean any others that you choose.
In the Applications Tab:- Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
- Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
- Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
- Clean any others that you choose.
After you have made the above selections:- On the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
- On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
- On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
- Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
- After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
- Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
- A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
- If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
- To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
- Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
- Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
- If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
- Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
- Click Close to exit the program.
Viewpoint Media Player and Viewpoint Manager have been identified as adware by some. It is often installed with AOL software, including AIM. If you do not use Viewpoint or if you have an alternative on your computer, I suggest you uninstall both Viewpoint Media Player and Viewpoint Manager.To uninstall a program, click Start>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs. Highlight the program you want to remove and click Remove. If the choice is "Change/Remove" click that and then follow the instructions to remove the program.
Reboot into normal mode.
Create a new HJT log.

I'm filling in for grsamf while he is on vacation. I see that SAS removed an uninstaller for Clickspring.
Just to be sure all the bad files are gone, please run this scan:
Please RIGHT-CLICK HERE to download Silent Runners.
- Save it to the desktop.
- Run Silent Runners by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" on the icon on your desktop.
- You will receive a prompt:

- Do you want to skip supplementary searches?click NO
- You will see a text file appear on the desktop -. Another message box will appear saying: "Silent Runners has started It's not done, let it run (It won't appear to be doing anything!)
- Once you receive the prompt All Done! The results are in a file that the tool has created You will find it in the same directory as the script or on your desktop. The log is named "Startup Programs (ComputerName) date/timestamp.txt".
- Open the text file that the tool has created .
- Copy that entire log, and paste it here.
*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.** Note: If you have a script blocking program you may get a warning asking if you want to allow the script to run. Run Disk Cleanup in each user's profile:
Click "Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup"
Please make sure the following are checked:
-- Downloaded Program Files
-- Temporary Internet Files
-- Recycle Bin
-- Temporary Files
Click "OK" and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. As long as you have 3 users, we should check the HijackThis logs of each. We will need to do it one at a time, though.
Please logon as the next user and post a HijackThis log from that user. After I confirm that it is clean, we'll do the last one.
