Unable to access internet, update security software, and computer is running very slow

Greetings,

I am trying to help my dad fix his pc.  Not sure what he may have done to it, but I know he has had issues with viruses/ spyware/ malware in the past.

  • I am unable to access the internet using IE.  However he is still able to send and receive email.
  • I am also unable to update his malwarebytes anti malware program.
  • The system runs very slow, and sounds as though the hard drive is constantly being accessed.
  • He has also informed me that his @ symbol no longer works.

I asked him not to try fixing anything himself, and to let me help, but I’m not sure if he listened :)

Thank you for your help.  I have included the hijack this log:

Hi Sean2009

I'm kevinf80 and I will be helping with any issues you may have. Please be aware that some of the logs I may ask for can be very complex and can take a long time to decipher. I am a volunteer here with a job and family so I ask that you be patient when waiting for replies.
Please DO NOT run any scans/tools/fixes on your own as this will conflict with the tools we are going to use.
Please Print or Save to Notepad all instructions and please follow them carefully and if there's something you don't understand or that will not work please let me know and we will go through it together.
Malware is often buggy and can be very unstable, with that in mind it is advisable to backup any important data before we begin.
If you do not reply within 72 hours the thread will be closed, if you need more time let me know. Likewise if I do not respond within 48 hours feel free to PM me.

* If you are using any cracked software, please remove it. In addition to being illegal, when you install cracked software, you are running executable files from dubious, unknown sources. You are giving these sources access to information on your hard disk, and potential control over operation of your computer. Definition of cracked software HERE

** If you are using any P2P (file sharing) programs, please remove them before we clean your computer. The nature of such software and the high incidence of malware in files downloaded with them is counter productive to restoring your PC to a healthy state. That includes BitTorrent uTorrent etc and similar programs.

Please proceed as follows :-

Step 1

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan only.  Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5577
R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [avp] C:\WINDOWS\avp.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [aelylcon] C:\Documents and Settings\steve brophy\Local Settings\Application Data\gfgcpxlpp\esnddvwtssd.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Digital Line Detect.lnk = ?
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.mcafee.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://stwmls.MLXchange.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.realtytools.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.toolkitcma.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.toolkitcma2.com
O16 - DPF: {4ED9DDF0-7479-4BBE-9335-5A1EDB1D8A21} -

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.  Close HiJackThis.

Step 2

Re-boot into Safe mode with Networking. As PC boots tap the F8 key contiuously until you see the Windows advanced menu. From the options choose Safe mode with Networking. Next,

Download OTM by OldTimer.

    :Commands
    [EmptyFlash]
    [EmptyTemp]
    [Purity]

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • Please save the log to a location you will remember.
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Step 4

Download Security Check by screen317 from HERE or HERE.
Save it to your Desktop.
Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box. Press any key when asked.
A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Step 5

We need to see some additional information about what is happening in your machine.
Please perform the following scan:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links.  Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs         1. DDS.txt
             2. Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
  • The instructions here ask you to attach the Attach.txt.user posted image

  • Instead of attaching, please copy/past both logs into your next reply.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.

Please note:  You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run.
After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection.
Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.
Information on A/V control HERE

What i`d like in your reply :-

  • Log from OTM
  • Log from Malwarebytes
  • Log from Security Checks
  • Both logs from DDS

Kevin,

Thank you for your reply.

I was unable to complete running DDS past the initial screen.  I disabled McAfee security center, and I am unaware of any other script protection that may be interfering.

Hiya sean2009,

Unistall HJT Version 2.0.2 from Add/Remove Programs via the Control Panel. Next,

user posted imageClick here to download HJTInstaller Version 2.0.4

  • Save HJTInstaller 2.0.4 to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Post the new HJT log and give me an update on your system, any specific issues?

Hi Kevin,

I was never able to run the DDS scan.  Everything seems to be working fine, though.

One strange thing with McAfee;  It says I need to click “fix” to verify my subscription.  It then shows a pop up with a green check saying that everything is ok and my subscription has been verified.  The big red ‘X’ does not go away and says my subscription needs to verified and I need to click the “fix” button.  Seems to be working anyway.

Here is the new log:

Hiya Sean2009,

You have the McAfee security suite, that includes a Firewall. You`ve also got the Windows own Firewall active, you need to turn that off. Two Firewalls will clash and may even negate protection. It could be the reason for the issue you have. Dont worry about DDS not running, it will have been down to McAfee.

Proceed as follows :-

Step 1

  • Download OTC by OldTimer and save it to your desktop. Alternative mirror
  • Double click user posted image icon to start the program. If you are using Vista, please right-click and choose run as administrator
  • Then Click the big user posted image button.
  • You will get a prompt saying "Being Cleanup Process". Please select Yes.
  • Restart your computer when prompted.

Step 2

Your Adobe Acrobat Reader is out of date. Older versions are vulnerable to attack.

Please go to the link below to update.

Adobe Reader Untick the Free McAfee® Security Scan Plus (optional) unless you want it.

Step 3

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:

  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to "JDK 6 Update 21 (JDK or JRE).
  • Click the Download JRE button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.

Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.

  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Do not remove any entries for JRE-6 Upate 10 onwards, these are removed automatically by the new installer
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u21-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

-- If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
-- If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
-- The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications.
To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it:

  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter.
  • Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Step 4

Download and scan with CCleaner

1. Starting with v 1.27.26 (This version no. will differ), CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation. IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbar-free or Slim versions instead of the Standard Build.
2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 24 hours"
3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:

  • Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies if you want to keep those.
  • Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
  • Clean all entries in the "System" section.
  • Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
  • Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:

  • Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
  • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
  • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
  • Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

Step 5

We now need to reset your system restore points and create a new clean one. To do this “Turn off” System restore > Left click start > Right click My Computer > Left click Properties > Select System restore tab > put tick in Turn off System Restore box > apply > ok. To reverse as previous but remove the tick from Turn off System Restore > apply ok.

Create the new restore point > Start > all programs > accessories > system tools > system restore > create a restore point > In the Restore point description box give it a name for reference eg. Clean 1. The time and date are added automatically > then select create and follow the wizard out.

Post back when you have completed above, let me know if there are any remaining issues.

Hi Kevin,

I’ve completed the above instructions.

Also, I’ve disabled windows firewall.

Everything seems fine, although I’m still getting the red ‘x’ on mcafee saying my firewall is turned off and I need to click “fix” to verify my firewall subscription.  It then shows a pop up with a green check saying that everything is ok and my subscription has been verified.  The big red ‘x’ goes away, and then comes back with the same warning message.

Is it OK to delete the securitycheck icon from the desktop?

Hiya Sean2009,

Yep its ok to delete Security Check. Regarding your issue with McAfee, i`d contact there help facility regarding that issue and get it sorted. They will probably tell you to reinstall it. Your last set of logs were clean so you`re good to go.
Here are some tips to reduce the potential for malware infection in the future; I strongly recommend that you read them and take them to heart so that you don't have to endure the process of cleaning your computer again.

Make proper use of your antivirus and firewall

Antivirus and Firewall programs are integral to your computer security. However, just having them installed isn't enough. The definitions of these programs are frequently updated to detect the latest malware, if you don't keep up with these updates then you'll be vulnerable to infection. Many antivirus and firewall programs have automatic update features, make use of those if you can. If your program doesn't, then get in the habit of routinely performing manual updates, because it's important.

You should keep your antivirus and firewall guard enabled at all times, NEVER turn them off unless there's a specific reason to do so. Also, regularly performing a full system scan with your antivirus program is a good idea to make sure you're system remains clean. Once a week should be adequate. You can set the scan to run during a time when you don't plan to use the computer and just leave it to complete on its own.

You will have several programs installed, these maybe outdated and vulnerable to exploits also. To be certain, please run the free online scan by Secunia, available Here Before clicking the Start scan button, please check the box for the option Enable thorough system inspection. Just below the "Scan Options:" section, you'll see the status of what's currently processing.... user posted image
...when the scan completes, the message "Detection completed successfully" will appear in the Programs/Result section. For each problem detected, Secunia will offer a "Solution" option. Please follow those instructions to download updated versions of the programs as recommended by Secunia.

Use a safer web browser

Internet Explorer is not the most secure tool for browsing the web. It has been known to be very susceptible to infection, and there are a few good free alternatives:

Firefox,

Opera, and

Chrome.

All of these are excellent faster, safer, more powerful and functional free alternatives to Internet Explorer. It's definitely worth the short period of adjustment to start using one of these. If you wish to continue using Internet Explorer, it would be a good idea to follow the tutorial HERE which will help you to make IE MUCH safer.

These browser add-ons will help to make your browser safer:

Web of Trust warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous ones:

Available for Firefox and Internet Explorer.

Green to go,
Yellow for caution, and
Red to stop.

Available for Firefox only. NoScript helps to block malicious scripts and in general gives you much better control over what types of things webpages can do to your computer while you're browsing.

These are just a couple of the most popular add-ons, if you're interested in more, take a look at THIS article.

Here a couple of links by two security experts that will give some excellent tips and advice.
So how did I get infected in the first place by Tony Klein
How to prevent Malware by Miekiemoes
Finally this link HERE will give a comprehensive upto date list of free Security programs. To include - Antivirus, Antispyware, Firewall, Antimalware, Online scanners and rescue CD`s.

Reply so I know that you`ve read this, also let me know of any other issues or if all ok....

Take care,

Kevin
