Welcome to the Dell Malware Removal Forum, jenweg.

My name is williamkidd (or WK) and I will be helping you deal with the issues raised in your log. Please post the answers to the following questions by replying to this post.

* Have you posted this issue on another forum? If so, please provide a link to the topic.

* If you have disabled System Restore in an attempt to begin cleaning malware, please enable it now. We will flush System Restore when we are finished cleaning and we are sure that everything is running smoothly.

* If you are using any cracked software, please remove it. In addition to being illegal, when you install cracked software, you are running executable files from dubious, unknown sources. You are giving these sources access to information on your hard disk, and potential control over operation of your computer. Definition of cracked software HERE.

* If you are using any P2P (file sharing) programs, please remove them before we clean your computer.  The nature of such software and the high incidence of malware in files downloaded with them is counter productive to restoring your PC to a healthy state. That includes BitTorrent, Kontiki, and similar programs. There is a list HERE.

* If this computer belongs to someone else, do you have authority to apply the fixes we will use?

* Have you already fixed entries using HijackThis? If so, please restore all the backups and then post another log.

* After we begin working, please print or copy all instructions to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out procedures. Please follow all instructions in sequence. Do not, on your own, install/re-install any programs or run any fixes or scanners that you have not been instructed to use because this may cause conflicts with the tools that I am using. Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate. It is understood by the trained analysts that once a helper replies to a log, he continues working with you until the issue is resolved.

* During the course of our cleanup please do not do any additional online work or surfing until we have verified that your system is clean.

* We may be using some specialized tools during our fix. Certain embedded files that are part of legitimate programs or specialized fix tools such as process.exe, restart.exe, SmiUpdate.exe, reboot.exe, ws2fix.exe, prcviewer.exe and nircmd.exe may at times be detected by some anti-virus/anti-malware scanners as a "RiskTool", "Hacking tool", "Potentially unwanted tool", or even "malware (virus/trojan)" when that is not the case. Such programs have legitimate uses in contexts where an authorized user or administrator has knowingly installed it. These detections do not necessarily mean the file is malware or a bad program. It means it has the potential for being misused by others. Anti-virus scanners cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert you or even automatically remove them.

* If your replies do not fit in one post while we are handling your issue, please reply to yourself until all text is submitted. It may take several posts.

I look forward to your reply so we can begin cleaning.

Instructions posted for this user are customized for this user only. The tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections. If you think you have similar problems, please post a log at the top of this board to start a new forum topic.

Hi jenweg,

We usually close inactive topics so that the helpers can move on to assist others. If you are going to be away again, it might be good to let your helper know, so that he saves his notes in anticipation of continuing when you return. We will contact williamkidd and let him know that you are back. He will continue with you as soon possible. :emotion-1:

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (v1.40) and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on
  • mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:

    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.

  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the
  • OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:

  • Make sure the "
  • Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the
  • Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave
  • all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "
  • Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "
  • The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click
  • OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:

  • Click on the
  • Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that
  • everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the
  • Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

-- If Malwarebytes Anti-Malware results in any error messages, please refer to Fixes for common problems and Error Codes. Some issues with errors can be related to malware infection but others are not.

Please download Rooter.exe and save to your desktop.
alternate download link

  • Double-click on
  • Rooter.exe to start the tool. If using Vista, right-click and Run as Administrator...
  • Click the
  • Scan button to begin.
  • Once the scan is complete, Notepad will open with a report named
  • Rooter_#.txt (where # is the number assigned to the report).
  • A folder will be created at the %systemdrive% (usually, C:\Rooter$) where the log will be saved.
  • Rooter will automatically close. If it doesn't, just press the
  • Close button.
  • Copy and paste the contents of Rooter_#.txt in your next reply.
Important: Before performing an ARK scan it is recommended to do the following to ensure more accurate results and avoid common issues that may cause false detections.
  • Disconnect from the Internet or physically unplug you Internet cable connection.
  • Clean out your temporary files.
  • Close all open programs, scheduling/updating tasks and background processes that might activate during the scan including the screensaver.
  • Temporarily disable your anti-virus and real-time anti-spyware protection.
  • After starting the scan,
  • do not use the computer until the scan has completed.
  • When finished, re-enable your anti-virus/anti-malware (or reboot) and then you can reconnect to the Internet.

Reports/logs to post in your next reply:
* MBAM report log
* Rooter_#.txt
* A fresh HijackThis log

Please print out and follow these instructions: A guide and tutorial on using ComboFix.
If you downloaded ComboFix previously, delete that version and download it again as the tool is frequently updated!

As part of it's routine, ComboFix will check to see if the Recovery Console is installed before attempting to remove any malware. If not installed first, Combofix will not attempt to fix some serious infections.

Before running Combofix, review your Recovery options for Vista:

In case something goes wrong you want to ensure you have the ability to recover your Vista installation. You can use your Windows DVD to boot up into the Vista Recovery Environment.

If you do not have your Windows Vista DVD please review the infomation below.

Does your computer have a Recovery Partition? If so you can press Alt-F10 at bootup and you may be given a Recovery option. Please read the prompts carefully so you don't just restore to factory default which would wipe your drive clean and reinstall Vista! If that option doesn't work you have two other options, both of which require some time and attention:

  • Download a
  • Vista Recovery Disc if you do not have SP1 installed. Please note that you will need a torrent client to download the file and a burning tool that can burn ISO images. Both are available as free software. Suggestions and download links as well as instructions are included in the guide for the burning software and below the download link at the download site for the actual ISO.

  • Download a
  • Vista Recovery Disc if you do have SP1 installed.
Ctrl-V doesn't work in Command prompt windows but right click and choose paste does. Just copy the commands and paste in the command window. For burning the ISO, you can still use the relevant instructions provided at the link for non SP1 to use ISORecorder to burn your CD. Please note that you will need to run all the tools in AIK as Administrator, especially the Command prompt window.

At this point you're ready to run Combofix:
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.
  • After completing all instructions, please copy and paste the contents of C:\
  • ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
  • Be sure to
  • re-enable your anti-virus and other security programs after the scan is complete.
  • If you no longer have access to your Internet connection after running ComboFix, please reboot to restore it. If that does not restore the connection, then follow the instructions for
  • Manually restoring the Internet connection provided in the " How to Guide" you printed out earlier.
-- Do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the Combofix scan has completed, as this may cause the process to stall or the computer to lock.
-- Combofix will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave it disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore it.
-- Combofix disables autorun of all CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal and increase security.

Do NOT use Combofix unless you have been instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert. It is a powerful tool intended by its creator to be used under the guidance and supervision of an expert, not for private use. Using this tool incorrectly could lead to serious problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. Neither I, sUBs or this site will be responsible for any damage you may cause to your machine by running ComboFix on your own. Please read Combofix's Disclaimer.

I also wanted to add that I did go in and turn off the Live Windows One Care however the scan said it was still enabled.

iWinGamesHookIE.dll is a BHO related to Iwin Games installation. See here and here which recommends removal. CF already deleted the file but its program folder and other related files remain. To remove it completely reboot your computer in "safe mode" using the F8 method.

Go to Start > Control Panel or Start > Settings > Control Panel (if in Classic View) and double-click on Add/Remove Programs. From within Add/Remove Programs highlight "iWin Games" (if listed) and select Remove. Vista users should use the Programs and Features section of Control Panel.

If the program is not listed in Add/Remove, look for an uninstall or remove option from within its program group. Click on the Start > All Programs (or Program Files), and use the program's uninstaller. Another option is to navigate to the folder itself using Window's Explorer and double-click on the program's uninstaller from that location.

Run HijackThis, and press "Scan." When the scan is complete place a check mark next to the following entries (if they are still present): (Please be careful and do not check any other boxes)

O2 - BHO: IEHlprObj Class - {8CA5ED52-F3FB-4414-A105-2E3491156990} - C:\Program Files\iWin Games\iWinGamesHookIE.dll

It probably shows "file missing" by now. After checking it, CLOSE ALL open windows except HijackThis and click "Fix Checked" to remove the entries you checked. A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES. Once it has fixed them, close HijackThis and reboot your computer normally.

Please download TFC by Old Timer and save it to your desktop.

  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!
  • Double-click on
  • TFC.exe to run it. If you are using Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator.
  • Click the
  • Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • Important! If TFC prompts you to reboot, please do so immediately. If not prompted, manually reboot the machine anyway to ensure a complete clean.

  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "
  • Next".
  • A notification will appear that "
  • Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click " OK" and then click the " Finish" button to return to the main menu.

    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.
If you cannot boot into safe mode, then perform your scans in normal mode.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:

-- If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
-- If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
-- The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications but it's not necessary.
To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and
  • uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter.
  • Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Caution: Your log show that you are using file-sharing programs.

Using any peer-to-peer (P2P) or file sharing program (i.e. Limewire, eMule, uTorrent) is a security risk which can make your system susceptible to a smörgåsbord of malware infections, remote attacks, and exposure of personal information.

The reason for this is that file sharing relies on its members giving and gaining unfettered access to computers across the P2P network. This practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft, system infection and remote access exploit by attackers who can take control of your computer without your knowledge. Even if you change the risky default settings to a safer configuration, downloading files from an anonymous source increases your exposure to infection because the files you are downloading may actually contain a disguised threat. Many malicious worms and Trojans, such as the Storm Worm, target and spread across P2P files sharing networks because of their known vulnerabilities. In some instances the infection may cause so much damage to your system that recovery is not possible and a Repair Install will NOT help!. In those cases, the only option is to wipe your drive, reformat and reinstall the OS.

Even the safest P2P file sharing programs that do not contain bundled spyware, still expose you to risks because of the very nature of the P2P file sharing process. By default, most P2P file sharing programs are configured to automatically launch at startup. They are also configured to allow other P2P users on the same network open access to a shared directory on your computer. The best way to eliminate these risks is to avoid using P2P applications. Since the nature of P2P programs is counter productive to restoring your PC to a healthy state, I recommend that you remove all such programs to reduce the risk of infection and keep your system clean.

Reports/logs to post in your next reply:
* SUPERAntiSpyware Scan log
* A fresh HijackThis log

Did you open Windows Explorer and check all folders in c:\Program Files and c:\programdata to ensure all iWin Games folders were removed? If not, please do so. Just right-click on the folder and choose delete if its still present. LimeWire should have been in a folder in Program Files too and you can delete that as well if its still there. Removing applications via Add/Remove do not always remove the parent folder so its always best to double check and delete the leftovers if they are still there.

The SAS scan found a lot of cookies. Cookies are text string messages given to a Web browser by a Web server. Whenever you visit a web page or navigate different pages with your browser, the web site generates a unique ID number which your browser stores in a text (cookie) file that is sent back to the server each time the browser requests a page from that server. Cookies allow third-party providers such as ad serving networks, spyware or adware providers to track personal information. The main purpose of cookies is to identify users and prepare customized Web pages for them.

  • Persistent cookies have expiration dates set by the Web server when it passes the cookie and are stored on a user's hard drive until they expire or are deleted. These types of cookies are used to store information between visits to a site and collect identifying information about the user such as surfing behavior or preferences for a specific web site.
  • Session (transient) cookies are not saved to the hard drive, do not collect any information and have no set expiration date. They are used to temporarily hold information in the form of a session identification stored in memory as you browse web pages. These types of cookies are cached only while a user is visiting the Web server issuing the session cookie and are deleted from the cache when the user closes the session.
The type of persistent cookie that is a cause for some concern are " tracking cookies" because they can be considered a privacy risk. These types of cookies are used to track your Web browsing habits (your movement from site to site). Ad companies use them to record your activity on all sites where they have placed ads. They can keep count of how many times you visited a web page, store your username and password so you don't have to log in and retain your custom settings. When you visit one of these sites, a cookie is placed on your computer. Each time you visit another site that hosts one of their ads, that same cookie is read, and soon they have assembled a list of which of their sites you have visited and which of their ads that you have clicked on. They are used all over the Internet and advertisement companies often plant them whenever your browser loads one of their banners. Cookies are NOT a "threat". Cookies cannot be used to run code or to deliver viruses to your computer. As text files they cannot be executed to cause any damage. Cookies do not cause any pop ups or install malware.

As long as you surf the Internet, you are going to get cookies and some of your security programs will flag them for removal. However, you can minimize this by referring to:

How is your computer running now? Are there any more reports/alerts, signs of infection or issues with your browser?
