possible email and other accounts compromised, unable to have hijackthis delete items selected.

The message I receive when it gets to the F2 REG:system.ini file is, "for some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may NOT be able to fix this.
If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click Start, Run and type:
    notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
and press Enter. Find the line(s) HijackThis reports and delete them. Save the file as hosts:(with quotes), and reboot.
For Vista simply, exit HijackThis, right click on the HijackThis.com, choose Run as  administator."

When I do this, Type in the run, notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts, I get:

This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for windows.

This file contains the mapping of IP addresses to host names. Each entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name. The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one space.

Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual lines or following the machine name denoted by a "#" symbol.

Then shows "for example"

I am unable to delete or remove any of the 023 Service with unknown user, as recommended  when puut into site for analyzing hijackthis log.think email account and craigslist accounts have been hacked or compromised. I created a new email account at hotmail then was unable to access.

I also ran an adware free and it showed that family: Trojan.win32,generic pak/cobra, malware was quarantined, and also

Exploit PDF- JS Gen (v), malware as being quarantined.

  Thank you, in advance.

Hi,

Welcome to Dell Community Malware Removal Forums,

Sorry for the delay in getting to you, I'm K27 and i will be reviewing your log for you.

Please DO NOT run any scans/tools/fixes on your own as this will conflict with the tools we are going to use.

Please Print or Save to Notepad all instructions and please follow them carefully and if there's something you don't understand or that will not work please let me know and we will go through it together.

Please DO NOT use this system for anything apart from visiting this forum and other sites I direct you too, as this will only make the cleanup process all the more diffecult.

Failure to reply in three (3) days will result in this topic being closed and I will remove it from my notifications, If you require more time then that is fine but please let me know.

The reason HJT cannot access the HOST file is because of the way that Windows 7 protects it, and nothing to do with infection. It is quite normal for that message when running HJT on a Vista/Win 7 system.

The reason you are getting all the "@ Unknown User" in the 023 section is nothing to do with infection and the definitely should not be removed, if you had managed to remove them entries, then you would have found yourself with an expensive paperweight. The reason you are seeing them entries is due to HJT not being very compatible with 64bit system, which you are running.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.

MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.

  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.

On the Scanner tab:

  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.

Back at the main Scanner screen:

  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

I need to see some additional information about what is happening in your machine.
Please perform the following scan:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs
1. DDS.txt
2. Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
  • The instructions here ask you to attach the Attach.txt.

  • Instead of attaching, please copy/past both logs into your next reply.

  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.

Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection.
Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.
Information on A/V control HERE

Please COPY/PASTE the MBAM log and BOTH DDS logs.

Thankyou,
K27.

Hi,

Please Disable all Anti-virus/Anti-Spyware/FireWall on your machine(instructions via links below)

Go here to run an online scannner from ESET.

  • Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked and the Scan Archives option is ticked.
  • Click on Advanced Settings, ensure the options Scan for potentially unwanted applications, Scan for potentially unsafe applications, and Enable Anti-Stealth Technology are ticked.
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Click the "Show Results" button
  • Then click the "Export to Text File" button and save the log to the desktop
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic and also let me know how things are now.

Please post back the ESET report for review.

Thanks

I did  all of the above.. After I "Click on Advanced Settings, ensure the options Scan for potentially unwanted applications, Scan for potentially unsafe applications, and Enable Anti-Stealth Technology are ticked".There is a start button, not scan and when it finishes, there is no  "Show Results" button, nor is there a  "Export to Text File" button to click.  I did it a second time and it found 2. the resulting log file is below..

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Dell DataSafe Local Backup\hstart.exe a variant of Win32/HiddenStart.A application
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Dell DataSafe Local Backup\Components\DSUpdate\hstart.exe a variant of Win32/HiddenStart.A application

You do not say to fix them so I did not.

    Thank you for your help.

    Best regards

    Hi,

They are just false positives and are nothing to worry about.

Are you having any other problem?

    Thanks
