You'll be limited to the same type/generation CPU you now have.

Laptops cannot be upgraded like that. Everything is part of the motherboard. Time to buy a new computer with windows 10. Windows 7 and earlier OS should not be used on the internet. They are not secure.

@Mizarstone

If the laptop is not running Windows 7 or Windows 8, I personally would not spend any money on an upgrade.

If the laptop is running Windows 7 or Windows 8, you would need to upgrade the RAM from 2 GB to 4 GB.

4GB of brand new RAM on eBay should cost about $20. Along with the RAM, I would consider upgrading to a 500 GB SSD which will cost you $60.

Whether you consider $80 acceptable cost or not is your decision.

@Mary G

First up all i wanna thank you for your valuable information,

But also want to add as i dont have enough money to spend on the new laptop , so wanted to upgrade and  I dont run any HD game or any programming application in my laptop.

If my internet is fast then its easier for me to work from home.

Assuming a supported version was made, you can run a faster Core 2 Duo.  Nothing else will work.

It depends entirely on the CPU you now have.

The two easiest upgrades to make on a Vostro 1015 are the hard drive and the DRAM. You can get a new Toshiba 2 TB, 9mm hard drive for $60, and new 2gB, DDR2-800 DRAM modules for about $25 each. The machine might also be capable of reading 4gB DRAM modules, if you install a 64 bit version of Windows 7. I have installed Win 7 Ultimate x64 and it works fine, and there is a 1tB HDD in the computer now, but I am hesitant to upgrade the RAM. I'd hate to risk $85 on a pair of 4gB RAM modules, and maybe find out too late that the BIOS can't read them, and the money is wasted. But if the Vostro 1015 can in fact handle a pair of new 4gB DIMMS, you could install Windows 10. If you wanted to.

Upgrading the CPU on a laptop as old as a Vostro 1015, I wouldn't even attempt this. Even if you could find a faster, 4 or 8 core CPU, the heat sink and cooling fans would probably not be able to handle it. It gets to the point that, if your upgrades are going to cost more than about $120, you might as well buy a new laptop.

Dead end system - no upgrade to any Core i CPU.

Whatever you'd spend on upgrades, put toward a new(er) system.
