Intel Rapid Storage Update
I have tried repeatedly to update the IRS software that came with my Windows 8 system to the Windows 10 version available on my system's drivers and downloads page. It fails every time, even when downloading a fresh copy in a new location. I've extracted the file and attempted to run the setup file, but always get "A reboot is pending" error message, even after rebooting.
How can I get this software updated?

Pertaining to my original post, Extract, not Install, the package you downloaded from the Drivers and Downloads page under your computers Service tag number. Go into that folder and open either the -x64 (64 bit systems) or the -x86 (32 bit systems) folder. Right-click iaStorAC.inf and select Install. Reboot your system and IRS will be updated.

Older and Older systems DO NOT take Newer and Newer versions of INTEL RST.
Windows 7 comes with Matrix storage manager 8.9
The INTEL MSM is not INTEL RST
Windows 7 Requires INTEL RST 9.6 for advanced format drives aka larger than 80 gigs.
Intel RST replaces Intel Matrix Storage Manager. HOWEVER you cannot update to your hearts content from 7 to 8 to 9 to 10 to 11 to 12 to 13 to 14 etc. As the drivers and chipsets get newer the older ICH5 6 7 8 9 10 etc are dropped from support.
downloadcenter.intel.com/.../15251
Version 9.6.0.1014 may be the max for your motherboard
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2682&CC_0104= "Intel(R) ESB2 SATA RAID"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27C3&CC_0104= "Intel(R) ICH7R/DH SATA RAID"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27C6&CC_0104= "Intel(R) ICH7MDH SATA RAID Controller"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2822&CC_0104= "Intel(R) ICH8R/ICH9R/ICH10R/DO/5/3400 SATA RAID"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_282A&CC_0104= "Intel(R) ICH8M-E/ICH9M-E/5 Series SATA RAID"
NEWER Versions (Not necessarily Supported on OLD chipsets)
Microsoft* .NET Framework 3.0 or newer is required to be installed on the system in order for the Intel® Rapid Storage Technology User Interface to install. Note that Microsoft* Operating
Systems do not have .NET 3.0 or newer installed by default.
There may not be an update. The WIN10 version of INTEL RST IASTOR.SYS may not support your chipset. The INTEL RST console app is a DOT NET application and will NOT RUN or install without DOT NET installed first from Control Panel and then all the update patches. You cant use version 14 on a system thats 3 or more years old. It was INTEL MATRIX Storage Manager until version 9.6
Version 10.1 was the first version to support drives large format drives aka bigger than 2TB with UEFI bios and GPT
You did not say what DELL model you have.
You also have to install these pieces via control panel.
And if you have Secure boot on it must be turned OFF
CSM and Legacy Option Roms must be turned on.
This means you have to install Legacy Direct show as well as DX9
and DX10 drivers from the june 2010 PATCH.
You download the file. extract to a folder and run the dxsetup.exe file as administrator.
Download details: DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010)
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109
Supported Operating Systems:
Windows 7;Windows Server 2003;Windows Server 2008;Windows Vista;Windows XP Service Pack 3.
You also have to re enable DOTNET and Legacy Direct play.

The Dot NET components and F6 Drivers are not native to windows 10 nor is INTEL RST. Windows 7 has INTEL Matrix Storage Manager 8.9 by default but requires INTEL RST 9.6 or higher to install drives larger than 80 gigs and newer than 2011. F2 sets SATA OPERATION to AHCI. CTRL I opens the BIOS Raid menu if enabled.
The Control panel add features to windows requirement remains REGARDLESS of whether or not its windows 7 or 8 or 10. Earlier versions of windows used an EXE installer aka XP and Vista.
INTEL RST DROPS support for chipsets as they go along requiring you to install OLDER Versions of INTEL RST for Older chipset versions.
Some systems require 9.6 , 10.1, 11.0, 12.0, 13.0 drivers and wont work with the latest 14.xx.xxxx WHQL Driver.
With NVME there is
Intel® Rapid Storage Technology Enterprise NVMe (Intel® RSTe NVMe) RAID Driver
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25771/
To all the posters who say its NOT F6 drivers note that this is INTEL's description of the driver due to support going all the way back to XP. Windows 7 and later can have these files extracted to the root of a flash drive to be setup during partitioning of the drive.
Optional: one of the following F6 Driver Diskettes (depending on your operating system):
f6flpy-x86.zip - for 32-bit versions of the operating system
f6flpy-x64.zip - for 64-bit versions of the operating system

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25165/
Other Versions
11.0.1012 (11.7 Drops support for ICH7)
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/20868/
10.1.1008
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/20104/
9.6.1014
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/15251/
Pre-Installation Using the "Load Driver" Method.
1. Extract all driver files from the F6 Floppy zip archive.
f6flpy-x86.zip - for 32-bit versions of the operating system
f6flpy-x64.zip - for 64-bit versions of the operating system
2. Select a USB key media and copy the following extracted files:
iaAHCIC.inf, iaAHCIC.cat,
iaStorAC.inf, iaStorAC.cat,
iaStorA.sys, and
iaStorF.sys
3. For Microsoft Windows OS*:
- During the operating system installation, after selecting the
location to install Windows, click 'Load Driver' to
install a third party SCSI or RAID driver.
- Continue to step 4.
4. When prompted, insert the USB media and press Enter.
5. Follow the prompts and browse to the location of the installation
files. Select the appropriate .inf file (64 or 32 bit). If a
supported controller is detected there will be no error message.
Follow the prompts to continue and complete the OS installation.
Failure to load the F6 drivers will result in the following message.

Do not change the settings on my thread. SpeedStep is giving extraneous information that doesn't pertain to installing the IRS update from my systems Drivers and Downloads page.
