The battery on the motherboard is called CMOS battery which stores the system date and time. If the CMOS battery fails, it would reset and show a wrong date and time on the computer. It would not save the correct date and time until it is replaced.
In many cases it would also beeps 5 times at system start up, indicating the failure of CMOS battery.
The standard lifetime of a CMOS battery is around 10 years. However, this may vary depending on the on the usage and environment if the computer.
