Dell Studio 1558 Support for Windows 8

Is Dell not going to provide driver support for Dell Studio 1558 Laptop?

If YES,   When?
If NO,     Why?

Studio 1558 - Windows 8 64 bit Drivers (unofficial)

Likely this will cover the Studio 1555 also. Post any additions you find on this forum and if anything doesn't work in the list.

I have the exact same issues as you have described.  I have no idea what is causing this now.  I flashed my bios from A05 to A12 and it still made no difference.  I have given up just now after what feels like 400 reinstalls and put windows 7 back on.  Hugely frustrating because I actually like Windows 8.  It has to be driver related.

Did you install any drivers or is this A Clean Install of Windows 8 with no additional drivers?

its a clean Install of windows 8 ....

But it seems now my laptop stable after Microsoft updates for ATI drivers

"Advance Micro Devices Inc. - Graphics Adapter WDDMI1.2 - ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5000 series"

when did you get the updates?  So is it ok now when you remove the power etc?

I updated last night ( around 10:00 PM EST) ... please check for windows updates ...

But still some random shutdown but not while changing brightness or power remove

Are you able to adjust brightness without BSOD on the 12.8 driver?

I have tried everything, and am on a second HDD running Windows 7 until Dell, ATI or one of us in the community can find a working solution for 1558 users trying to use Windows 8.

I can confirm that there seems to be no work-able solution to the ATI Radeon HD 5470 not working on Windows 8. I have tried the 12.10 driver as well as the Beta 12.11 driver, and even the generic PnP display driver that comes pre-installed with Windows.

I constantly got a Blue Screen (BSOD) every time the screen dimmed, brightened or even simply refreshed from switching applications. I finally gave up and am now back on Windows 7.

This is very frustrating. I know Dell cannot do much without the support from AMD to update the driver. However, as the distributor of their parts, and the company for which I paid, I am going to complain here. Hopefully they will go to bat for us on this issue. Are you listening Dell support?

Hi Jemi200,

The 'Dell Product Group' team has not tested this system with Windows 8. Please keep checking our support site for updated drivers. The drivers may or may not be available in future. You can refer to the link for compatible systems tested by Dell with Windows 8 http://dell.to/SQojxk

Please reply if you have any questions.

I've seen the threads that for example say the synaptics driver is not here yet, but it seems like the only one and it won't disrupt the system so much.

I have a Studio 1558, am I set to upgrade to my Windows 8 Pro?  I have a ATI Radeon 5470, IDT sound, probably the same bluetooth as every other 1558, etc hardware.

Did you tried the driver "Advance Micro Devices Inc. - Graphics Adapter WDDMI1.2 - ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5000 series" this came microsoft update ... by default it takes to ATI driver which cause the issue. i manually installed above driver, some how works good.

But still it not installed all the drivers properly, still 2 or 3 drivers not found for base drivers.

Issues

Trackpad not working properly

Crash for unknown reason

if it continues for a week, may be i'll switch back to windows 7. Is there anyway to get cashback from microsoft?

There is an updated Dell Synaptic Driver taken from another Dell model but will work with yours.

Synaptics Touchpad http://downloads-us.dell.com/FOLDER00800134M/2

Could you tell me if you are experiencing any issues mentioned in this thread here? Could you also post a screenshot of your Device Manager. What BIOS revision are you on?

Also exactly what drivers you have installed and in what order and if your system is stable. I don't have a Studio 1558 to play with.

Thanks

Edit I have merged all these threads on the Studio 1558 running Windows 8.

For Dell Studio 1558 with ATi Raedon HD 5470, use this -

www2.ati.com/.../12-10_mobility_vista_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc_whql_net4.exe

or search for "12-10_mobility_vista_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc_whql_net4.exe"

I just installed it, no problem till now.

for laptop graphix "mobility" word in the driver filename is crucial.

I had some issues after installing "12-10_vista_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc_whql.exe"

For everyone's convenience first entering this thread I have listed the following in an unofficial list:

Studio 1558 - Windows 8 64 bit Drivers (unofficial)

Likely will cover the 1555 also. Post any additions you find on this forum and if anything doesn't work in the list.
