Windows 8 on a Dimension 5150
Greetings -
My name is Chris and I just wanted to introduce myself to the community and add that I have installed Windows 8 Pro 64bit on a Dimension 5150 and seems to be "so-far-so-good" with just an out of the box install

Glad to hear it, did you check the device manager for any errors?
Press the [Windows] and [Pause|Break] or [Windows] and [ e ] (to open computer) and then select properties.
On this screen next select Device manager.
Hopefully it should look something like mine.
If you have an error, yellow ? or ! as in my base system device then Windows 8 hasn't found a system driver correctly. Quickly check to see if you have missed installation of a driver. If you still can't find out what it is. Right click the device with the error and select properties:
Go to details and select Hardware ids.
For a limited time get Windows 8 Media Centre Pack for Free. See here.
Review this article here and search through the fixes/updates for any preinstalled software.
There is a free Dell Windows 8 for Dummies guide available from here.
In addition there is a number of useful videos here.

Thanks natakuc4 -
The only driver that I needed (so far) was a video driver, and thanks for the links, I am using the Enterprise edition so I think I am out of luck on the media center :(

Hey there, where did you get the video driver from? I've done a fresh 32-bit install and the device manager has an exclamation mark on the video driver.

The Dimension 5150 should run Windows 7 and Windows 8 fine. Check the processor to see if it is 64 bit compatible using the Intel Processor Identification Utility:
http://www.intel.com/support/processors/tools/piu/sb/CS-014921.htm
Also you should scan your system with Crucial to see how much memory you have. The system should run fine on Windows 7 or Windows 8 with 2 GB of RAM but the upgrade to 4 GB is highly recommended (2×2× 1 GB).A m4 SSD will boost the system up significantly particularly if Windows 7 is installed on it:
http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/listparts.aspx?model=Dimension%205150&Cat=RAM
If you want to install Windows 7 or Windows 8 see Windows Reinstallation Guide:

If you have any specific questions about the upgrading the OS in particular feel free to ask.

The machine should run Windows 8 fine. Before buying I would advise testing and to do that you can use the enterprise trial.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-US/evalcenter/jj554510.aspx
This machine should be 64 capable and as you have 4 GB of RAM I would test with the 64 bit version. Just check the processor using the Intel Processor Identification Utility but I think all processors for this model are x64.
Note ensure you have a means to restore your older version of Windows just in case.
See my Windows 8 Reinstallation Guide/A Clean install of Windows 8:
http://philipyip.wordpress.com/dell-community-forums/
With regards to buying Windows 8 you are in the UK and Tesco are selling the upgrade for £50 so are Amazon:
http://www.tesco.com/direct/microsoft-windows-8-pro-upgrade-edition/735-6120.prd?recommendationId=cfe8eda6-0556-44db-a312-27e6ade827a4.0&skuId=735-6120
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Windows-Pro-Upgrade-Edition-Vista/dp/B008GRKGXK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1364975796&sr=8-1
Overclockers.co.uk for £45:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SW-150-MS
You will likely have to restore your old version of Windows to be eligible to upgrade.

I can confirm that the above will run Windows 8 32/64-bit and will run "only" Windows 8.1 32-bit and not the 8.1 64-bit.

Are you saying that you are trying to install Windows and "frozen" in the logo Introduction or
You have installed and now "frozen" in the logo Introduction?
