cannot open documents saved on cd/dvd

I am a novice as is probably apparent by now and I am not even sure I am in the right forum.  I have set-up my new 660 Inspiron CPU.   was not happy with Windows8 and installed Star8.  I also prefer Openoffice and installed.  When I insert a cd with documents I created on my old CPU, using OpenOffice, I can get a listing of the documents on the disc but I cannot open them.  Have I failed to install or activate a program that is required on the new CPU?
