Cop[ying Windows XP from new dell desk top to an old inspirion 3800
I am fairly computer illiterate. I was recently given a inspiron 3800. I know its not the greatest but it was free. It was running windows 98 so I thought I could just dump all of the files off of the laptop and download the XP disk that came with the computer. It loads all the way to the end and says its missing some kind of windows root file

You cannot use the copy of XP that came with the desktop on the 3800. It is licensed for use only on the system with which it was sold and will not activate on the other system. If you want XP on the Inspiron you can do a clean install of XP with an XP Upgrade CD (assuming you have the Windows 98 CD that came with the system).
