Dimension 3000 Windows XP will not start
I am having a problem with Desktop... Error Windows could not start b/c following file is missing or corrupt
System32\hal.dll..
I have tried this method but I got....Failed to add the selected boot entry to the boot list...
PLEASE can ANYONE HELP.
Repair the Boot Configuration in Windows XP- At the C:\WINDOWS> prompt, type cd \
Note: There is one space between cd and \ (the backslash).
- Press .
The prompt changes to C:\>.
- Type bootcfg /rebuild.
Note: There is one space between bootcfg and / (the slash) and no space between / and rebuild.
Press .
The following messages appear:- Scanning all disks for Windows installations
- Please wait, since this may take a while...
- The Windows installation scan was successful
- These results are stored statistically for this session. If the disk configuration changes during this session, in order to get an updated scan, you must first reboot the machine and then rescan the disks
- Total identified Windows installs: 1
Note: This number is one if there is only one installation of Windows found.
- [1]: C:\WINDOWS
Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All) appears.
- Type y, and press .
Enter Load Identifier appears.
- Type one of the following that pertains to your system:
- Windows XP Home Edition for Windows XP Home Edition
- Windows XP Professional for Windows XP Professional
- Windows XP Media Center for Windows XP Media Center
- Press .
Enter OS Load Options appears.
- Type /NoExecute=OptIn /fastdetect and press the key.
The C:\> prompt returns.
- Remove the Windows XP CD from the CD drive.
- Type Exit, and press the key.
The system boots into Windows XP.
No Events found!

Most likely the hard drive has failed, run the Dell diagnostics extended tests to verify this.

Boot from the CD you create and run the diagnostics
