Dimension 8200

I am thinking about purchasing a Dell Dimension 8200.  Has anybody successfully installed Windows 98 SE on this machine?  The machine is sold with no OS pre-installed, and I'm not quite ready to make a leap to XP yet.

I have looked at the specs http://docs.us.dell.com/docs/systems/dim8200/specs.htm#1102296, and it does not indicate a support for Win 98 SE.

Thanks.

Rick.

raalv,

Whether it will work depends on what peripherals are installed. Dell will provide no support for the system and you will have to research the manufacturers' Web sites to see if Windows 98 drivers are available for them. It is a risky proposition at best, particularly since support for Windows 98 is nearing an end.

Thank you Denny for your reply.  I just read that Dell Dimension 8200 is noisy, so I'll look for a new system that's quieter.

Hello,

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 and it is as quiet as you can expect a computer to be.  You really have to look and listen to see if it is even on.  I think you will run into a noisy computer every now and then no matter what.  I'm really happy with my Dell Dimension 8200!!

Many owners of the 8200 had noise problems.   Maybe you were just lucky yours shipped with quiet fans.  Apparently, the noisy fan seems to be the CPU fan made by Datech.  I know I can swap out the fan, but why not just purchase something with no known problems.
