Fix: High CPU usage on Latitude D620

Hi all,

After many tries I finally solved a high CPU usage problem with Vista and I thought it would be nice to share the solution with other people. In my case the system is a Dell Latitude D620 but the problem might affect other Dell systems.

Problem description: 100% CPU usage on Windows Vista at random intervals

Solution: Set the Hard Drive Acoustic Mode to 'Performance' in the Dell BIOS.

I dont know exactly what the 'Quiet' mode does, but I suspect there is some buffering mechanism in the background that causes this problem...

Hope it helps!

the quiet mode for the HDD allows for it to actually slow down the read and write times, so that read/write head is actually moving slower, resulting in less noise from it.

great, but interesting find.  :smileyhappy:

I have a Inspiron E1505 and I experienced a random high CPU usage check here
This has happened just two days, the first day happened like three times in like 5 hours window, like two days after the same problem happened, but onli once

This was last week since then, the computer has been working fine...
I'll check that option and see how it is, and I may test it..

yes, switching wireless on/off was a trick that worked too on the Latitude D620, but in my case it didnt fix the problem permanently... it required resetting the wifi connection like 2 times an hour..
