Help! Drivers Needed

I have a Dell Dimension 4600 and had to repair the operating system.  Most of the drivers are gone and I was reading drivers have to be installed in a certain order.  Could someone please tell me the order and attach driver links?  I am having a horrible time and sure could use some help.  Needless to say, I am a little embarrassed to ask such a trivial question but I guess this is how I will learn.  Thank you in advance. :emotion-1:

Hi Gilly,

You may refer to the following link on How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order http://dell.to/X1IKGu

This system has drivers for Windows XP operating system. You can download the drivers from the following link http://dell.to/R6BGJ0

Please reply if you have any questions.

I have a Dell Dimension 4600 and had to repair the operating system.

Does that mean you performed a "repair install," as distinct from a clean install?

You'll get better results with a clean install, and it will likely be easier to install the drivers.

Regarding install order, some say the drivers must be installed in a certain sequence, but I haven't had that problem. If you can get the 4600 online, I suggest starting with the Intel chipset drivers, which can be downloaded straight from Intel's download site. There, you will find an online chipset installation utility to assist you.

The Intel network driver is here: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/uk/en/ukdhs1/DriverDetails/Product/dimension-4600?driverId=5K26D&osCode=WW1&fileId=2731106304&languageCode=en

The SMBus driver is part of the chipset drivers package: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/uk/en/ukdhs1/DriverDetails/Product/dimension-4600?driverId=Y4NJD&osCode=WW1&fileId=2961893832&languageCode=en

If the yellow exclamations are gone from Device Manager, all your devices are installed and there's little point to reinstalling the chipset drivers.

Is the chipset driver that appears on the dell site and the Intel site the same? Probably a silly question but trying to understand this process as best I can.

Yes -- the Intel site is an alternative source for the drivers.

Again, if there are no yellow exclamation marks in Device Manager, the drivers are installed and working.

Hi Gilly,

Thank you for the response. The links mentioned in my previous post has all the drivers for your computer. Do you get any error message while trying to install the drivers? Are you looking for any specific driver?

You may share a screenshot of 'Device Manager'. You may refer to the video on How to take a screenshot:

Below is the screenshot on how to attach files. To reply click on 'Use rich formatting':

Please rely if you have any questions.

I looked at the page and drivers won't install correctly so I'm doing something wrong.  Was hoping someone can help with the actual links so I can better understand the process and learn exactly what to do.  Thanks so much for responding.  I can see this will be a great site for learning!

No error messages.  The drivers appear to load but still have a few yellow exclamation points.  I need the follow drivers: network (not sure which to choose) other device and smbus (don't know what they are).

SMbus has the exclamation mark but will likely disappear once I install the driver.  I just wanted to learn how to access the chipset from the Intel site.

Thanks so much rdunnill; the links are exactly what I needed! :emotion-1:  Can't get the 4600 online so I will need to figure out how to get the chipset from intel. Is it complicated?  Hopefully I'll soon be on my way.  Thanks again!

With the help of very knowledgeable and kind site members, I was able to find all driver needed for a Dimension 4600 Computer.  The problem now is the Ethernet Controller won't install or uninstall.  The error message is "The device may be required to boot up the computer."  I did install the chipset first as directed.  The Ethernet driver that I tried to download is http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/uk/en/ukdhs1/DriverDetails/Product/dimension-4600?driverId=5K26D&osCode=WW1&fileId=2731106304&languageCode=en

I am at a total loss! :emotion-6:  Any help will be greatly appreciated!

You may have a ghost device taking up resources. This link explains how to unhide ghost devices so that they can be deleted.

This issue is one reason why a clean install as opposed to a repair install is preferable.
