Help With Windows XP

I've got a Dimension 4400 with XP. The computer worked fine yesterday, then this morning when I came in we'd had a power outage and my computer was off. When I turned it on I had the following message:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

\windows\system32\config\system

You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup CD-rom. select "r" at the first screen to start repair"

Can anyone offer some advice on what to do? I've rebooted and put the XP disk in the cdrom. Didn't work.

Thanks, jennifer

NO the message means to use the Recovery Console not start Install by pressing "Enter" key then select the next R for Windows Repair , but select the first R for Recovery Console.

See Kelly's Korner info:

AggieArcaya,  Here is what the message was describing.

Repair Reinstall will delete all of the files and registry used by XP. It will not delete applications and user settings. You will have to get all the updates again including SP1 (sp1 if not on your cd)
1.- Insert the Windows XP CD
2.- Configure your system to boot from the CD drive.
3.- Restart the computer
4.- Press the spacebar when the computer prompts to Press any key to boot from CD"
5.- The Welcome to Setup screen appears.
6.- Press the Enter key to continue. Do not choose the option to press R to use Recovery Console.
7.- The system scans to see which hard drives are available.
8.- When the license agreement screen appears, press the F8 key to accept.
9.- You should now see C:\Windows Press R at this point to repair
10.- Setup will proceed with the installation.
Once setup is complete the system will restart.

If all goes well, you will have to reinstall all the critical updates.

Gary,  Thanks, I stand corrected.

In either case, remember to set the bios to boot using the CD drive as the first boot.
