I would uninstall Word and install it again, it seems like there is a conflict somewhere because it is trying to install something for the program and then seems to not find it and freezes. I would try the reinstall and see what happens.
If your Word is part of Office or stand alone (not sure if this is an option if it is part of Works, as I don't have that, but you could try if that is your case), in control panel, add/remove. click on Office or Word as appropriate, click change. You will have the option to repair, add/remove components or uninstall. I suggest that you first try repair, which will check the installed components and repair them if necessary. Then go to add/remove components and check that all the components of Word that you want are set to run from your hard drive. If the original install was 'typical' rather than 'custom', not all components will have been installed, and it may be that you were trying to access one of those marked 'install on first use' and that was what caused the problem.
