PLEASE HELP "Updates were not configured correctly"

I am running 32-bit windows vista on a dell M1330 from 2007.

When i try to boot up the laptop, it gives me the screen "updates were configured . Reverting changes. do no turn off your computer", No matter what i do (safe mode, reboot, last good configuration) i cannot get to my login to get in!!! i need to get in ASAP, please help me. i am not very experienced so please be basic in ur response. thank you!

ps-  i need the info on the HD, so please dont suggest i simply reinstall vista
