Reinstalling XP

I have a Dell Latitude notebook (C400) that came with Windows XP (I'm guessing Service Pack 1). It's less than 3 years old or so. I have the Dell Drivers & Utilities Resource CD, but my Dell Windows XP Reinstallation CD is damaged and I didn't make a backup copy. I just read on Denny's New Dell User's Guide that Dell only warranties software for 21 days so it would seem I can't get a replacement.

My question is this --> I recently got a Dell Dimension desktop and it came with a Dell Windows XP CD (with Service Pack 2)... would the COA (the 25-character identifier) that's on my notebook work with a Dell Windows XP CD (Home Edition w/ Serv. Pack 2) or would the COA only work specifically with a Dell Windows XP CD with service pack 1 ?

Thanks in advance.

wisemanhsu,

Assuming the edition is the same for both systems (either XP Home or XP Professional) you should be able to use the new CD to install XP on either of your two systems. You should not be prompted to enter the COA upon reinstalling.

Thanks.

If I reinstalled using a different Windows XP CD, would it be possible to reformat the hard drive and then install? Basically, I want a clean slate on the hard drive, no junk in the registry, no spyware, old uninstalled programs and files, etc.

Thanks in advance

wisemanhsu,

Yes, a clean install with any XP Reinstallation CD can include deleting the existing C:\ partition, recreating it, and formatting it for a completely clean start after the operating system has been installed.

Hi wisemanhsu,

For cleaning the registry,I use CCleaner at http://www.ccleaner.com/ and for spyware use Ad-Aware SE at http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ and Spybot Search and Destory at http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=home and there free program's.
