Tips On Installing Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2)

Although the info in the first link below is for users of McAfee software, the general content is sound advice to all who wish to insure a smoother installation of SP2.

IE: Temporarily enabling Windows Firewall and temporarily disabling all third party security software before attempting to install SP2. Also advisable to switch off any other tasks that may be running such as polling for mail and screensavers etc.

Hey Red Dawn,

I have Mcafee security suite, and had everything turned on while downloading Vista SP2 BETA(3 months ago),and installed the official release of Vista SP2 last night while Mcafee was running(including 2 way firewall) and it installed with no problems.Could be a problem for other systems though?....

wess278,

I would try reinstalling Firefox or perhaps ask on Firefox's Forum.

The only other report of a problem with FF after installing SP2 I've seen is this one HERE if it's any help.

dgkpcon,

Most like youself may have no problems installing SP2, the above are only tips for a smoother installation and not set instructions. If I remember correctly, with SP1 some users had to go so far as to completely remove their third party security software to get it installed.

Yes you are right.I went 3 months with problems before i could get SP1 installed, because of out dated drivers.

I don't think SP2 is as hard of an install as SP1 was though?....

what version of Firefox are you using, wess278?  I have FF 3.0.10 installed on a Vista SP2 Home Basic laptop and it runs fine.

I used the full standalone SP2 installer (rather than the one from Windows Update) to install SP2.

Corrupted Firefox program files or corrupted Firefox user profile perhaps.  un-install your existing version of Firefox and install

the latest available version and/or create a new Firefox user profile.

@Red Dawn:

Some BlueTooth devices may not work correctly after Vista SP2 is installed.  See MS KB article 970408 for details.

Also, Vista SP2 users that have BitDefender installed should look at the following BD forum threads:

For Vista SP2 users who have NOD32 v4.0.x installed take a look at this solution.  Wait for a fully compatible version of NOD32 that works properly with Vista SP2.

NOD32 v3, however, works fine with SP2.

erpster05,

Thanks for the added links.

Update: NOD32/ESET Smart Security on Vista Service Pack 2.

A fix for the SP2 issue problem is currently being distributed to those with "test mode" enabled in the update setup. After a couple of days, it will be distributed to other users who update from regular update servers.

I had the same problem with Firefox not working or only being able to open one Window after installing Vista SP2 x64 upgrade.  I re-installed Firefox and now it works fine.  During the Firefox installation it said I needed to close Firefox even though I had already closed it.  I opened the Task Manager and closed the Firefox program and then the installation proceeded without a hitch.  Firefox is now working flawlessly.   As a precaution it is advisable to back up your bookmarks.  When I reinstalled Firefox all my bookmarks and addins were unaffected.
