About the same thing in Safe Mode.
It runs Phase 1 of disk check and shows 100 % complete of phase 2 but then I get the same message "Windows was unable to complete the disk check".

Reboot and press F12. Go to Utilities partition and run extended hard drive tests. Note any error messages.
Then boot from XP CD and start Recovery Console.
At c: prompt, type in:
Press Enter
Now take a nap !
When it's done, remove XP CD and reboot normally, and back up files on CDs asap, just in case... ;)

Reboot and press F12..... that took me to the Boot menu. Didn't see anything about Utilities partition, or where
to run extended hard drive tests?

Update:
I was able to run chkdsk in DOS. All's well now.
