Task Manager displays the programs, processes, and services that are currently running on your computer. You can use Task Manager to monitor your computer’s performance or to close a program that's not responding
What Operating System and exactly what is the issue?

I have Windows XP and Office 2010. The issue is that I have about 75 processes listed and the CPU is about 50% with no programs running and my controller is running crazy. Is this normal? Should I end the processes? Do I have an issue?

Have you checked for malware that might be running? It doesn't often show up in Task Manager, so it would require an anti-virus scan/anti-malware scan, and possibly an anti-rootkit scan.
