Windows 7 Reinstallation

The HDD crashed on my Inspiron N5040 laptop.  I have replaced the HDD and tried to do a system restore of Windows 7, however I am getting an error indicating that the HDD is to small.  I notice in several other posts that the system recovery disks created when the laptop was purchased are a disk image, so the size of the HDD needs to match the original.  I believe I can still request original OS installation disks from Dell, however the cost of this seems to be prohibitive.  I could go to my local retail store and purchase Windows 8, but I am not sure if it will work on this laptop.  It may also require that Windows 7 be installed so that it can perform an upgrade.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get the OS back on this system?
