Windows Media player 11 setup problem

Okay.  What are you aksing?

In the folder C:\Windows you should have a file called Wmpsetup.log. (To see the .log part of the file name go to folder options, view tab, uncheck hide extensions for known file types. Also, in case it is a system file, check show hidden files and folders and uncheck hide protected operating system files, click yeas on any warning message, click Apply, OK; Folder options is an applet in control panel, or you can get to it from Tools menu in My computer or Windows Explorer).

 

If you have Wmpsetup.log, open it in Notepad,  search for lines beginning with ERROR.

Or if you copy and paste here the section of the file from and including the error line, we may be able to find a solution.

 

There are three other files, Wmp11.log, Wudf01000Inst.log and WMFDist11.log that give information about the three components the WMP11 installer tries to install. They may give further information on precisely when rge error occirred.

 

When you tried to install WMP11 did you have anything running in the background, specifically any firewall (other than the XP firewall, antivirus or antispyware active monitoring? Some of these can prevent installation from writing to ceratain parts of the registry, which would be one possible cause of failure to install.

I am having this exact same issue: I am using a Latitude C840 for the record.

Here is my Scenario: I am trying to upgrade from WMP 10 to 11. It goes through the install process then at the end of the install I get this message from the installer:

And after I reboot, WMP 10 is back.

I have tried reinstalling wmp11 numerous times after this and got the same error every time...I tried shutting down all firewalls, virus apps, etc. I have tried rolling back wmp10 from add/remove programs with no avail, I have tried third party clean-up apps like 'Dial-a-fix' thinking it was a registry error that was glitching....hmmm...grr....nothing works.

I tired it meaning I deleted both the OCX and OCX.7 folders in the registry

I also did the wipe of the setup log, and got these errors in the log:

I then went into wmp 10 and deleted the playlists....and tried to reinstall. Still nothing

I also did a force User access to all folders on the harddrive, since it looked like some  folders were not accesable ( eg. the documents and settings\all users\documents folder was locked even though I was in Admin mode..) I fixed this...still no go...

this is stumping me now.....

any ideas would be appreciated.

Well I fiddled around some more trying to find the source of the problem, by trying to reset folder access owmerships of the whole system (thinking that some folders were inadvertantly locked to my administrator account...which I found online as some peoples troubleshooting paths....).

 

and for the record, it did fail the install once again....same exact error.

I had this same issue and finally fixed the problem.  I was denied access to certain portions of the registry even though I am an administrator on the machine.  I found this link and followed the suggestions.  I was then able to install WMP 11.  Hope this helps.  Here is the link.  http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=191821

But in the post you gave; he mentioned setting the registry part of: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Windows Media Player

 

 

....I didnt have that entry in my registry. I had all the other, and set the permissions like the post said.

I did setup Windows media player 11 on my dad computer it went fine.

 

 

Same here with my desktop computer and my wife's as well.....

 

It's just this dang one that is giving me trouble.

 

 

It's so weird, everything else on the system works great, and WMP 10 works fine.....It just wont install WMP 11.

 

I have tried everything I could find on the internet about the issue, but still no go......

we dont have a solution there yet, but am working on it as well.
