Windows XP may be pirated...

I just had a message pop up on my Dell Dimension 2350 saying my Windows XP does not appear to be an authentic copy and may have been pirated.

I can no longer access the Windows Update screen because the validation tool won't run. An Active-X feature will not install to allow it to complete.

When following the Micrsoft instructions to validate, it tell me to contact Dell because Dell installed the product.

How can I validate this product to get my system running again? It appears that Windows has limited my access to my network and the Internet until this problem is resolved.

Thanks for any help you can lend....Steve S.

After running the WGA Diagnostic program, my Windows XP appears to be genuine, but I need someone at Dell to tell me how to convince Microsoft of that so I can update it and go on with life. How do I find someone at Dell to help me do that?

schinjay,

Go here, log in, and provide the details of your problem. A Microserf will assist you in resolving the problem. (An example of input is this thread.)

Microsoft really messed up on this. MS explains how to uninstall it here.

A tool to do this automatically can be found here.

Additional info on WGA and WGAN can be found at Groklaw.

Thanks a lot for this info. I finally got someone at dell, who I bought the system from, to help me through this manual procedure. That got rid of the messages that my Win XP is not authentic.

Now I still can't get Windows Update to run properly or get into MSN Hotmail since this occurance. It also seems that other programs, like my Norton Anti-Virus, aren't able to log in on the Internet to run Live-Update and such.

Any ideas on cleaning the rst of this up? Thanks, Steve S.
