retaining desktop icons

I have an I9400 laptop attached to a Dell flat panel monitor. I keep my windows desktop on the laptop screen and do most of my work on the attached monitor screen. But when I detatch my laptop and take it on the road the desktop icons alwasy get rearranged when I boot up and I have to arrange them all over again. Is there a simple way to freeze these desktop icons so no matter what I do or attach or detach the icons are alway in the same place and in the same order?
