taking a Studio 1537 up to Windows 8.1
Hi (Phillip Yip i hope),
it just occurred to me that this would make most sense as a new post rather than an reply to an old one, yes i am a rank novice.
Although a rank novice at this i have inherited a Studio 1537 i would like to upgrade to Windows 8.1.
In line with your wiki and these posts, i have created a list of details of hardware IDs below, can you advise the correct drivers to support the upgrade ??
Many thanks in advance for you help and the amazing lengths you go to to support "Dell-ites".
System is a, Dell Studio 1537, bought in Australia. Currently running Windows Vista Home Premium SP2, 64 bit OS, Processor is Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 @2.4 GHz, with RAM = 4.0 Gb.
I can see no unknown or “Other” devices, and none of the icons under Device Manager have (?) or (!) on them, i assume this is because it is a standard built machine.
Hardware ID data is as follows;

I now have an unofficial driver set for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 for the Studio 1537:
http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/driver-sets/studio-laptops/studio-1537-windows-7-64-bit/
Variants wise you have the AMD/ATI 3450i video and Intel WiFi Link5100 AGN.

No you do not. Windows upgrades install any new drivers if they are needed or tell you if you need a new driver it doesn't have. For some drivers, such as video and audio and printers, you probably should upgrade from the manufacturer's site, as the Windows installed drivers may not have all the options available.

Since Windows 8.1 is significantly newer than your system it likely has the SATA drivers you need inbuilt. See here for more details:

i note in your Studio 1537 guide there is no mention of needing to upgrade the SATA drivers.
Can you confirm i will not need to do this ?? If i do can you point me to where i may find them ??
i have been looking for the drivers for my WD HDD on the Dell site and can only see Seagate or Samsung drivers, is this because WD was absorbed by Seagate ?
cheers,
JNinOz
