taskbar & Desktop Win 7 64-bit

Now I'm having problems with the taskbar. When I click on a scroll over a program, nothing lights up. When I try to click on it, the program won't start. I have to do ctrl+alt+del, then run the task manager. Then i can get the program to run. I also try to run a program located on the desktop and nothing happens there either.

I haven't install any new programs, just updates from Microsoft & Adobe Creative Suite 6 & Zone Alarm.

I have a 4 year old Alienware Area-51

The same issue happened in safe mode.

Hardware diagnostics passed except the mouse was not lit up when i tried the mouse test.

Used built in test, not resource disk.

yesterday everything worked just fine. today is seems to lock up every few minutes.
