upgrading memory failure with Inspiron 1520 XP home

I am trying to upgrade my 2 GB of memory on my 1520 to 4GB (2GB x 2) 200 pin DDR2 SODIMM 256x64 (PC2 5300) dual Channel kit. After install Ram showed 3.75 GB

and seem to work fine. At shut down got lines across the screen and then the monitor would not go on when the computer rebooted. Reinstalled the original 2GB sticks and 1520 ran normal. The new sticks are compatable and people have installed them successfully into the 1520 previously according to reviews on the website of the seller.

Does anyone have any suggestions - should I try reloading the new sticks. I followed the correct instructions in loading;  shut down computer, remove power cords, remove battery, ground remove and reinstall sticks, first stick A, then B. Would love to get 4GB working properly. Thanks for your help.

Make sure you are running the latest bios for the computer.

Remove all the memory. Now take one stick of the new memory at a time and place it into the a slot and boot. note indications. Repeat this with the second stick.

So I did exactly like you instructed, and rebooted after installing the first 2 GB stick into Dimm A, and everything worked fine.

3.0 My Memory
3.0.1 Total Memory 2 GB
3.0.2 Available Memory 1.1 GB

3.1 My Memory (Extended Information)
3.1.1 Total Virtual Memory 2048 MB
3.1.2 Available Virtual Memory 1963 MB
3.1.3 Total Page File Size 2046 MB
3.1.4 Available Page File Size 1983 MB
3.1.5 Swap File C:\pagefile.sys
3.2 Physical Memory Devices
3.2.1.1 Location DIMM_A
3.2.1.2 Speed 667

then shut off. Went through my complete shut down routine and then installed the second 2GB stick into Dimm B. Rebooted system but got a blank screen.

Any thoughts on this?

Thank you for your help.

Well it could be that stick is bad. To verify use the same A slot to test each stick. All you are insterested in at this point it finding out that both sticks of Ram are good.
