win xp on inspiron 5100

Windows can no longer open ".exe"files.  Downloaded a registry cure, but guess what? It opens with a ".exe" file. So now what? With end of life for xp in April 2014, can this unit handle win 7? Somebody please help.

The Inspiron 5100 is a very old system and has only DDR RAM. 1 GB of RAM is amongst the minimum system requirements which is non standard for this machine:

Likely it has 256 - 512 MB of RAM which is below Windows 7's minimum requirements. I think the graphics are also below or cutting close to the minimum system requirements for Windows 7. The processor is also quite poor in this model.

In my opinion the upgrading this system is not worth the cost of a Windows 7 license. If you manage to install Windows 7 (it will be a struggle) and it won't run well.

You should consider a fresh clean installing Windows XP on your system after a complete wipe using a utility such as DBAN it will solve the issues aswell as other underlying issues. Windows XP's performance degrades over time and likely given the age of this model this XP installation has had plenty of time to get corrupted.

XP is reaching its end of life in April 2014 but this computer isn't Windows 7 capable so you are best to remain with Windows XP on this machine.
