windows xp boot disk

Question

Does anyone know where I can get a windows xp boot disk cd, I have made the 6 disks and they work ok but I thought that a cd would easier to use a cd ,tried to but the 6 disks on a cd but can't seem to get it to do that,any ideas

What type of 'boot disc' do you need?  The Windows XP CD is a bootable disc.

Not always, I have a reinstallation disk that came with the machine (red label) And it will not boot up. I put it in and up comes hit F1 or f2 and then just sits there, I have checked the bios and have boot to cd checked. What i have to do is change the bios to boot to floppy(disk) and then boot up with the 6 disks windows xp and then it asks for the windows xp disk, then I put in the  re installation disk and everything goes like clock work after that, I find in every case I have encounted this is the way I have to go.My 8100 8200 2400 they all have those red label disks and they will not boot up ,they will not work without using the 6 boot up windows xp boot disks

You've got something wrong. The whole purpose of the boot portion of the Windows XP CD is so you CAN boot with it. There have been lots of posts on the forum about booting and that's the suggestion everytime it comes up.

Normally, you set the BIOS so the CD drive is the first boot "drive" and it should boot up.

Yes ,you are right,just for the heck of it I just put the cd in and it asks what I wanted to do install windows xp, I guess I had trouble with all of them ,but its a good idea to keep in mind about having the 6 boot up disks,gets you out of trouble, Thanks again for the Info have a great day byeeeeeeee

THANK YOU so much for stating this! I spent half an afternoon yesterday with a Dell Dimension 3000 trying to boot from the Dell system utility reinstallation XP OS disk and couldn't do it. I tried every sort of BIOS setting - even unchecking the boot from the hard drive setting and the machine still bypassed the CD-rom and booted from the hard drive! The disk autoruns after XP boots from the hard drive.

I used the Belarc info utility to find out that iWindows XP SP2 is currently loaded. I'm not sure what system the Dell disk restores, but I downloaded both the XP and XP sp2 floppy disk boot utilities from the MS site. I created the six disk setup using the XP SP 2 setup, and when booting from the floppies, a message appeared that a file was missing on disk 4! I recreated disk 4 again, but haven't tried to reboot from the floppies yet (there are only so many hours in a day!).

I'm looking to reformat the drive, repartition it, and do a clean install of XP. If I can't boot from the CD-rom, I can't see how I can wipe the drive clean.

Any suggestions?

I was thinking of either:

1) using a win 98 boot disk from bootdisk.com and running fdisk

2) Using the free copywipe utility

3) Getting the MS 6 disk floppy boot running.

Is there a different way of creating those floppies - possibly from the hard drive rescue utility? I was trying to avoid using any Dell utilities because I want a pristine install free of these excess utilities and Mcafee.

I did do that and the computer still ran through the paces and booted from the hard drive.

Is there any file that I may be missing in the cd-r root directory that instructs the system BIOS to boot from the CD?

The CD only runs on the autorun feature after bootup.

hi Again after you boot up and asks for your cd it will show you your drive make sure it says c drive sometimes it changes to another drive watch out for that ,after you select the drive select(make sure you select ntfs) the long format not the quickie,the long format takes about 30 minutes after the format it will start loading up have a great day and eveing

After you make your 6 boot disks go into your bios and change it so it will boot from the floppy.put the first one in and that boot up after you install all of them it will ask for your windows xp disk or the reinstallation disk both the same and you will be off and running   Harleybluecobra
